We stayed in the countryside in the Valle d'Itria at Masseria Cervarolo in October and it was fabulous. We had a car so toured all around. Alberobello is worth seeing for the trull but it is super touristy, don't think I'd want to stay there.
Locorotondo is a nice town, a good size without being too big, Ostuni is bigger but also nice, we liked both of those towns.
The Valle d'Itria is lovely, enjoy!
In Lecce we stayed at a great Band B called Five Rooms, it had free parking and was an easy walk into the historical centre.

Hi again. Yes it was easy from Masseria Cervarolo to visit Martina Franca, we went there one day.
There are all kinds of towns of varying sizes to see in that area, plus all the places on the coast as well. You will be glad you have a car. My husband found the driving to be fine, not as nerve wracking as driving on the Amalfi coast.
From our base in Lecce we did a few coastal towns: Gallipoli, Otranto and a few others whose names escape me now.
