On the basis of postings on the web, he's still in London, still giving informed, polite, painstaking advice.
A good recent example is at http://thorntree.lonelyplanet.com/me...d=0&from=1
My suspicion is he surfaces only when he believes he has a unique, useful, fact-based contribution to make. His absence from a board for any length of time might be a commentary on the questions.
His Latin grammar, BTW, is just fine. (though Ben, if you're reading this, it's 'quot homines', not 'personae': in Terence's day 'persona' surely meant 'mask')

Singletail is right: you deserve a reply, especially after these kind comments. My health is poorly as I have had inflammations of both feet since November. The painkiller I take, morphine, makes me sleep a lot, and I walk at a snail s pace (though I still cycle well) so I can do less in each day. This forum is a great solace, as with you I can take in my mind journeys that are no longer likely in practice. But I should love again to hear the long last whistle as the Dacia Express pulls out of Budapest Keleti, headed for breakfast in the restaurant car as the train rolls through the moonlit mountains of Transylvania towards Brasov. The case is not hopeless, some people in my case get well, or fairly well.
Thank you for asking

Dear Mr. Haines,
I hope you will soon feel much better. I have very much enjoyed reading about your travels.Your detailed accounts make me want to visit the same places.
I also appreciate the help you gave me in planning a trip to the area around London. I haven't gone on that trip yet due to slow recovery from a sprained back that happened when I stumbled on the cobblestones of Rome in December.
Hope we will both be travelling again before much longer.

Mr. Haines, I do wish you a hopefully quick recovery. I really do not know you but I understand that you have kindly helped out many people here with their travels.
My husband has had bouts with gout and it has incapacitated his walking a couple of times so I understand the discomfort you must be going through.
We will look forward to your future posts.

Dear Mr Haines,
I think there are still quite a few adventures left in you!
I hope your pain goes soon and there is no need for medication. I think with warm weather and walks, even though slow, you will start feeling more energetic and your health will improve.
Until then, we can all enjoy each others stories about travel, whether a trip just taken or a trip taken a few years ago.
Travel is alway interesting, regardless of how far one goes or when.
Wishing you well, Mr Haines~

Mr. Haines, I am sorry that your are not well. My father suffers from an illness which effects his feet too. I have missed not reading any new posts from you. Please keep coming back to the forum. You are so highly regarded.

Dear Mr. Haines,
I, too, miss your suggestions for London experiences that are outside the usual realm of tourist recommendations (including mine!)
Until you are 100%, please think of your time spent here with admirers as a respite from the tediousness of feeling poorly.
With best wishes,
Mel

I'm sorry to hear that you are unwell and hope that you are your old self soon.
In the meantime you can add a few new walks to your website
