Where is a good central location to stay in Madrid?

8 of us are traveling to Spain in Nov and need to spend 2 nights in Madrid. What area is convenient to all of the major sites? Do you have any hotel recommendations? We prefer 3-4 star but want a great deal of course!

Central in Madrid may very well mean around Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol, Gran Via. I have stayed and highly recommend the Hotel Atlantico, a Best Western hotel in Gran Via. They'll pick you up at the airport (courtesy van from; $6/pp to the airport). Great breakfast, a block from El Corte Ingles (great shopping, specially the supermarket in the lowest floor, great ideas for gifts), 3 minutes to Puerta del Sol, 10 to Plaza Mayor. At the time the prices were starting to climb as the hotel had undergone great renovations and it certainly was a great value at $90/double. Last I checked (I visit Spain frequently) the doubles were going for $110. Carlos V, another Best Western in Puerta del Sol, is popular with groups.

We stayed in the Hotel Europa on the Puerta Del Sol. Very cheap and conveniently located in the middle of everything. The double rooms were very large for European rooms and the newly renovated bathrooms were almost as large as the rooms. Get a room in the back of the hotel as the front side facing the square is noisy at night and the Madrillenos are a late night people. There is a restaurant right on the property which serves a mean paella. www.hoteleuropa.es .
Good Luck!

I agree with Chatters, although I don't care for Gran Via itself that much. I'd prefer being around Plaza Mayor or Puerta del Sol (although they are very close to Gran Via, I just don't like that street very well).

I stayed in the Inter Palacio San Martin which is in-between Gran Via and Puerta del Sol. It's a 4* and priced well for that level. I thought it was a wonderful hotel, one of my favorites in any city.

We stayed at the Hotel Europa several years ago and were very satisfied with our accommodation and in paricular the location. Our room was spartan but had a great bathroom and the price was astoundingly low. No breakfast included. However, as noted above there is a restaurant downstairs (we enjoyed sitting at the tables outside in the evening with a pitcher of Sangria people watching) and watching the orange juice machine is worth having at least one breakfast there. Agree the paella was good. The waiters, at that time, were pleasant though none spoke English.

I have their web site address somewhere. If you would like it, please post again and I will dig it up. I'll watch the thread for your response.

I stayed at the Prada Hotel about 5 mins by bus to the centre. supermarket next door, lots of takeaway places nearby, cakes to die for a few shops away, and internet cafe 3 mins walk. I was on a cosmos tour so dont know the price of the room but they were great, huge bathroom, one of the nicest hotels on my 24 day tour.

Check out the website for the Preciados Hotel in Madrid, very centrally located, reasonably priced and up to date.

Just look under Preciados Hotel in any search engine and it should pop up.

We've stayed twice at the Hotel Villa Real. It's in a great location; close to the Prado and the Thyssen museums, and within easy walking distance to lots of good restaurants, but yet it's on a relatively quiet and calm little square.

They have a nice bar, a very good restaurant, and a fabulous collection of Roman mosaics.

I think it's actually a 5*, but they often have good deals available online.

the tourist bus 2 day pass is such a bargain,( 13.50 euros) and passes in front of absolutely anyplace you would like to visit. they have three separate routes that cross over the whole city, and it most likely stops within a block of any hotel downtown.
they also come quite frequently and the theives do not tend to frequent them like the metros and public buses.

new functional inexpensive hotels called "high tech" are all over.
a friend stayed at one for 50 euros last week.

the AC has some 4 and soon a 5 star hotel also in madrid.
nice chain.

i think sol is very noisy and busy myself.
the museum triangle or off the gran via is better.

Check out www.madridman.com. It will include answers to all your questions and more. Used it for our spain trip a couple years ago and it was invaluable!

We are staying at the Orfila only one night on Oct 1. We are flying the next day to Malaga and renting a car & heading down to Villacana in Costa Del Sol, somewhere around Marbella. My friend and I are traveling alone. We have never been to Europe. Both of us in our 50's, this is quite an adventure! Any suggestions on how to get the most out of Madrid in just one day? What type of clothing to take for a week in Costa Del Sol? Would love some first hand information. HELP!!
