Quiet hotel in Madrid
Any recommendations for a quiet hotel in Madrid? We would like to stay in a 3 or 4 star establishment that is in a good location but not too far away from restaurants & the night life. We prefer a small hotel with character. Any suggestions would be welcome.

best western hotel arosa - don't let the best western name fool you. good buy, good locale. rooms start on the third or forth floor, so that helps some with the lively madrid night life sounds.
hotel villa real - better locale in my opinion, right off of paseo del prado, near the museums. very luxurious, but homey.

Hotel Lope de Vega is a good 4 star hotel-three years old. Room 504 was ours for a week-at the back and very quiet. best hotel breakfast I encountered in Spain. I like a new and stylish hotel since character often means poor plumbing and worn furnishings. It is 50 meters to the Paseo del Prado and then one short block to the crosswalk to the Prado. No place off the Paseo is far from restaurants and nightlife.

Ranald,
I can enthusiastically second Paul's recommendation of the Green Lope de Vega. it's within walking distance of the great tapas bars and nightlife of the Plaza de Santa Ana and the typical tavern restaurants of the Cava Baja, below the Plaza Mayor. It's new, fresh, sharp.

Another well priced, quiet, safe and well located option within walking distance of Old Madrid, but yet removed from the congestion, "street life", noise of the Puerta del Sol/Gran Via area is the Hotel Suecia, behind the Thyssen Bornemiza art museum and Parliament. It was a Hemingway favorite, built in the 50s by the Swedish gov't; however, the rooms were completely renovated in '00. It's on a tiny, 1 block long, peaceful side street next to the Círculo de Bellas Artes, which is a nice place to rest and have drinks and light meals upstairs on the comfy leather sofas with the arts and media crowd, or on the lively outdoor terrace.

Another recommendation for Hotel Suecia -- I stayed there in September and liked it very much. The room was very nice with very comfortable beds and a big bathroom. The staff was very helpful and the location very convenient and quiet. Definitely worth it -- I seem to remember we had a rate of 96 Euros for a double.
