Well here are some infos for hotels we stayed the past 5 hears in PAris:
Novotel Les Halles: nice charmless but large room with good bathroom, efficient service, bad croissants at breakfast, convenient location. Prices have gone up. Wouldn't stay again, unless i got a discounted rate.
Le Meridien Montparnasse: we stayed there because we got a great price, but were disapointed. ok sized old rooms with worn firnuture and ancient orange bathrooms(and we reserved via Meridien). Service indifferent. Don't expect character.
Hotel Scribe: nice-a bit old- but charming room with new and spacious bathroom. Elegant lobby, nice restaurants. I would be great by September when a complete renovation will have been finished. Excellent Staff.
Hotel Raphael: good rated for a Leading, spacious rooms but it needs renovation, had some problems with the bathroom, but staff was apologetic. Location not so conveninet for first time visitors. I would stay there again if they offered a better price or have done some work
Hotel De Vigny: by far the best hotel we stayed at Paris. It was faultless, very bright new room with a lovely small bathroom. Friendly staff and the best pastries and croissants in Paris.

GA9497,
We stayed on a side street almost across from the hotel du ville (city hall). It was quaint, clean, and a great location. I didn't see if they have air conditioning but when we were there, we didn't need it. Most of the rooms have small balconys with their windows. It was at an off season rate of 84 euro/night. The staff were helpful. They also offer a shuttle to the CDG airport. You can find them @ www.hotelandrearivoli.com

Lots of luck. jmf

Just a few months ago stayed at the Hotel de Turenne in the 7th. It's a 2* hotel in the 7th and we had a confirmed reservation for 80E per night for a superior double through a 3rd party online booking agency.

Location was good, they advertised as all rooms having AC but we couldn't figure out how to turn the AC on. Perhaps it was too early in June for the AC to be switched on. We didn't bother asking for instructions and just opened the window instead.

Room was ok, what we expected for a budget place. Shower stall had visible mildew in several places. Rest of the room was clean enough. No real complaints because it was only 80E per night.

At checkout however, the hotel insisted on charging us a higher rate, despite showing a printed confirmation of 80E per night. They said the booking agency made a mistake with the confirmed rate.

Later correspondence with the online agency stated that the hotel admitted their mistake and said they would credit me the difference - this never happened. Further correspondence with the agency requesting a follow up with the hotel has resulted in no response from them either.

So, although the price difference was minimal and the room acceptable for the ~80E price, I wouldn't stay there again as there are many other budget hotels in Paris to choose from that will honor a confirmed price made by one of their agents. If you do choose to stay there, I would book with the hotel directly.

Just last week I stayed in 2 hotels I absolutely loved...

Hotel Claude Bernard, Rue des Ecoles, 5th
We loved this place! It had the friendliest staff I ever met at a hotel, and good sized rooms with A/C which worked well and bathrooms with either cloth shower curtains or glass doors (although I did see one very tiny room too). While there there was an elevator, it only went to the 5th floor, whereas we were on the 6th, but it was very quiet up there. Excellent breakfast by French standards - typical croissants and 2 types of baguettes, but also yogurt, cereal, cheese, and eggs with a boiler you use yourself to cook the eggs to your liking. The rooms are all non-smoking. There have been some negative things said about the older paint and wallpaper needing sprucing up, but we could live with a bit of peeling and the colors were muted and pretty. There were pretty desks in each of our 2 rooms - they looked more antique than hotel style - and our triple room had wrought iron headboards. There were also small refrigerators in each room, stocked with 2 bottles of water which we were not charged for. The breakfast room was absolutely beautiful in peach and terra cotta colors and the man who serviced it through breakfast was as nice a guy as you could ever imagine. The location was excellent - an easy walk to Notre Dame, and about 2 blocks from the Pantheon or the metro. There was a boulangerie across the street. The only other negative was that one of our showers had so-so water pressure although the pressure of the water coming out of the faucet for the bath was very strong. Prices were what got us there in the first place - they had a summer special for 88 euros for a double including breakfast, and 118 euros a night for the triple (148 for Friday), with breakfast included and the 5th night free. We were nervous to go after some recent reviews, but we were pleasantly surprised and would definitely go back if this was our price range.

Hotel Duquesne Eiffel, 26 Rue Duquesne, 7th
A beautiful hotel!!! Decor is in red and yellow as found in Provence. Headboards, curtains, bedspreads in complimenting prints in these colors. The rooms were a good size - easy to walk around in and the bathrooms were new - ours had a shower with a glass door, tiled floor and walls and a granite counter around the sink. THere was A/C and an elevator. This was a splurge for me - I wanted a room where I could "see the Eiffel Tower from the bed". I had to move the bed over about 3 feet to do that, and the other bed did not have this view, but I was in heaven every hour watching the Eiffel Tower twinkle! Breakfast was not included and I did not go down to the room to see what was offered, but I believe it cost 11 euros. The lobby was beautiful with wood beams on the ceiling, a stone wall behind the bar, and the same pretty decor. The receptionist spoke perfect English. Each room had a name on a brass plaque on the door - ours was appropritaely called the Tour Eiffel. The price was steep at 199 euros, but because I read that another Fodorite got a special rate for the summer, I wrote and asked if they had a special they could give me and they reduced the price to 169 a night. If you want to see the Eiffel Tower, I recommend this hotel ( and even if you don't, but want to be in a nice quiet residential area.) Be sure to ask for a room with a direct view. The metro was about 2 blocks away, as were a few brasseries, it was about 4-5 blocks from the Invalides and Napoleons Tomb, with the Rodin Museum just past that.

Has anyone else noticed that the OP hasn't posted since April?

Oops - I was thinking of another hotel which had poor water pressure in the shower - it wasn't the Claude Bernard as I posted above. The shower there was fine. Sorry for the misinformation!

I have stayed at the following hotels while in Paris:

Hotel Campanile near the Eiffel Tower very basic. A single twin bed but with private bath, TV & phone. Breakfast included. Clean. Spare. Cheap. Metro stop a couple blocks away.

Hotel Brabent near the Opera. Typical small European room. Two twin beds. TV & phone. Older but nice. Clean. Nice bathroom. Excellent location. Metro stop in front of hotel. Nice brasserie attached to hotel.

There was another hotel I stayed at near Rue Mouffetard. It was run by an English woman. I think her name was Elizabeth. I can't remember the name of the hotel but it was REALLY basic & REALLY cheap. A lot of English speaking families stayed there. The hotelonly accepted cash. No credit cards. Great location but I think next time I would spend a little more for a nicer place. Although it would be a great place for backpackers!

We stayed at this apartment
http://www.vrbo.com/60877 and would return in a heartbeat. It looks just like the photos. Around the corner from the Trocedaro but when you turn the corner you are definately in a neighborhood. Good boulangerie and food shops nearby and a cafe on the corner. It was great and the price was right.

I have always stayed at Hotel Brighton and request a room with a Tuileries view which also includes a view of the The Louvre, Notre Dame, d'orsay, Eiffel Tower, Grand & Petite Palais.
