Cigalechanta, I think your good thoughts have been sent our way. Just got home and oh the sky looks very threatening, cold damp wind which has a touch of the ocean in it which we don't get very much in the Sacramento Valley (I miss that having lived all my live in the SF BayArea until 4 years ago). And a clerk said the news said it would rain tonight!! Oh how wonderful that would be. But of course by the end of January at the latest you can count on my grumbling about the rain, LOL.
And am sure Crefloors is waiting for rain too, right Crefloors? And know you certainly miss the ocean breeze being from Marin County. That is quite a change, Marin County to Reno area.
A happy wet weekend to Crefloors and a sunny dry weekend to you Ciga!

Today was our annual Flint River Fall Festival. The streets around our historic town square were blocked to traffic, and there were just enough tents of tacky crafts, embroidered UGA purses, sand art for the kids, a jumping contraption full of air, a wonderful race track for remote controlled cars, fried catfish and funnel cakes, and THE TAMS---that wonderful MOTOWN sound of "She's Young, She's Foolish, and She's Happy." The show was excellent, the warmup band (Brick House, Carwash, We Are Family, etc) doing covers in the same genre was also excellent. The day was perfect; autumn warm, about 75 degrees with a refreshing breeze that made dancing in the square irresistible. Saw many friends, kids off on their own exploring the booths, tasteful autumn decorations (straw, pumpkins, vibrant chrysanthemums) all around the courthouse. This day reminded us why we moved to a small village hours away from everything. (But we still like to get out and travel!)

Oh you Californians - I should send you some of our snow to put those fires out
!!
April - I don't know the original reason for the main square in downtown Edmonton being named after Churchill - it has been called that for quite a few decades.
The dedication last week was for a "renovation" (complete design change) from what was there before (a park) - it was a centennial project for the city.
But you know, there are a lot of places in Canada that are named for the connection - historical and economic and political - that we have to England/Britain in this country.
You live in Victoria - named after the Queen of England in the 19th century, in a province named British Columbia!!
I live in the province of Alberta (named after one of Victoria's daughters - or was it a granddaughter?), and in a city (Edmonton) named after a town of the same name not too far from London!!!
Yes, I did attend some of the 100th birthday festivities last Friday(October 8th), watched the very impressive, and long, fireworks display, but missed seeing the dedication.
There are municipal elections coming up on Monday, the possibility of a provincial election in Alberta very soon, and a lot of new festivities - so it has been quite a "happening place" lately with lots going on!!
Unfortunately the national news coverage tends to ignore regional news, which is too bad, we don't get to hear about events in other provinces and cities. I'd for one would like to know what is going on in other parts of the country. Perhaps we should start an "events informer" forum on Fodors!!
