How odd it would be to go back in time to visit cities and towns in Europe as they were in the past.

We perceive cathedrals, palaces, stately homes, guildhalls, castles, townhouses and fountains as centuries old - old, old, ancient - but there was a time when all this architecture was brand spanking new. I can hardly fanthom seeing the now centuries old cityscapes as new, exciting developments.

If I could, how about London after the great fire followed the Plague in the 1660's? How about seeing the "new" Wren churches which he rebuilt, including St. Paul's, when they WERE new?

Some years later, after the great fire, I remember reading that the Thames froze up for weeks. People even opened shops and roasting booths, bull-baiting shows and brothels on the ice. That seems a special time in history.

I'm willing to bet that many of you remember Wes. I just happened upon this posting from 1998 and wanted to bring it to the top again.
It was Wes all the way, insightful and thought-provoking. I wonder how many people he helped while frequenting this board? Likely a thousand or more...
We haven't forgotten you, Wes.

I would be happy to experience any of the scenarios that Wes posted. As long as....... I was wealthy enough to enjoy the trip, I don't fancy the tough life of a peasant, and that I was in a position where I could "fly under the radar" and stay out of trouble! eg I don't fancy Marie Antoinette's life at all! What a lovely post! I raise my glass to Wes, he must have been a fine traveller.....

In the spirit of the thread, I suppose I should have responded to Wes' question...I think I would have liked to have been François 1er, or at least one of his associates, and to have known Da Vinci.
