Agree. October can be very hit and miss, whilst Septembers have been fair of late. Whilst most of the attractions remain open all year round (especially in London), some may close at the end of the holiday season - but even this isnt until the end of October.
Once the schools are back at the start of September, the crowds get smaller but there is still a chance of some warmish weather (but don't depend on it!). By the way, spread your ambitions a little wider and visit the rest of the United Kingdom (and if you do, don't call Scotland or Wales - England!!!!).

pcheesy, I'm afraid you just never know. September can be lovely and warm, but equally it can be wet and chilly. Same goes for June - you were unlucky (although you were in Scotland But on average, you've got a better chance of good weather in June and September than most other times of the year.
The weather here in England always surprises even the locals. I was in Southern Italy at Easter this year, and London was getting MUCH hotter weather. Who'd have ever geussed that? Of course now I'm back in London, it's wet and chilly again.
