What would you do? Tickets to Italy in October!

This isn't really one of those "will the price of the tickets ever go down?" question, but more of a "if you were going to Italy in October, when would you normally start looking for and buying tickets?" question.

Right now the price is averaging about $930 TPA to FCO October 11-21. I know it's too early to really start looking.

I'm just curious to know what some of the regulars would normally do? If you were travelling in October, when would you really start looking at the airfare?!

Thanks so much!

In the past, usually 3-5 months in advance. Things don't seem real normal right now.

From approximately 3 months out -- I would check almost every day to determine the price fluctuation. I have been lucky, and found a return flight from Italy to Toronto last October for 700 Canadian dollars (plus tax - a necessary evil!) I had to look almost every day, and this price appeared exactly ONCE during that time period (I know as I kept checking after I bought my ticket, for interest's sake...).
Good luck.

Hi P,

>I know it's too early to really start looking.<

I don't think so.

A lot depends on how flexible you are and how many stops you are willing to accept.

I think that you might be able to save $100 between now and the end of March. After that, it's 50/50 that rates will go up or down.

www.kayak.com is showing its lowest fare right now as $905.

I think you just have to look on a regular basis, even every day. We went to Italy in Sept. 2004, and started looking for tickets in about January. Prices were high, about $950, then all of a sudden one weekend in early February, some cheaper tickets showed up on Orbitz, as I'm sure many regulars here may remember, as word spread quickly. We jumped on it and got our tickets for about $450 each, the exact non-stop flights between NY and Italy that we wanted. So you just have to be patient and persistent, and it's never too early. Good luck.
