last year we went to Garmisch with our two grown children and son-in-law and had a magical time. There is some interest in just repeating that trip though I'm not sure that's wise. In years past we've done Acapulco, So FL, Paris. Trying to decide what to do this year. Skiers are pushing for ski type destinations--French Alps, Salzburg. Sun types have interest in Mallorca, Sicily or at least Seville, maybe Barcelona. Though Vienna always sounds fun for New Years I assume prices at that time of year must be astronomical. I'd like to hear what others have done at Christmas/New Years that turned out really swell in hopes of getting some ideas for our trip this year. Thanks.

The sun types aren't going to be in for much fun in any of the 'sun' destinations you've listed - all of Europe goes through a winter, so if you're looking for a warm destination, you'll need to head for the tropics.

I spent Christmas in Salzburg one year and LOVED it - the Austrians really go to town at Christmas, with markets, Christmas trees everywhere (like, whole forests of the things), mulled wine, Mozart concerts, you name it. What's more, I was amazed to find many places open on Christmas day (some shops, museums, restaurants etc), so you don't have to suffer the shutdown that occurs in more southern countries.

And you may get snow, which always adds to the atmosphere at Christmas.

Thanks, Kate. Isn't snow a given at Christmas time in Salzburg? I still recall a Perry Como special on Christmas in Salzburg and it holds real appeal. Also do you know which is the closest ski area?

Our Millenium New Year was tops. I posted about it and will now try to find it and top the post.

Without doubt our best New Year was spent in Sydney for the millenium

My wife won 4 tickets for a private party on the Sydney Opera House Foreshore. There were only around 2,000 tickets available and these were normally priced at $750 each.

There were 2 huge fireworks displays, bands playing and acrobats scaling the side of the Opera House, a truly unforgetable experience.

Every New Year, Sydney puts on the greatest New Year celebrations, with incredible fireworks displays, and don't forget its the height of summer so no jacket required!

For the most part you're right - Salzburg 'should' be snowy at Christmas. But Christmas is still a little early in the ski season, and whilst the ski resorts will be fine, Salzburg (city centre) can't guarantee snow. We got snow, but it disappeared for a day or two when the weather got a little mild.

I'm afraid I didn't ski when I was there so can't help you with that - anyone else?
