The cheapest soft drink to buy for kids in France is usually sirop de l'eau. The sirop comes in lots of different fruit flavours & is diluted with still water. Much cheaper than fizzy drinks.
Get the kids to learn the french for a few of their favourite fruits, that way they will enjoy ordering their own drinks..

what rhona describes is what my friends get their kids (french speaking part of Switzerland)... they just call it (sounds like) "siro"
as above, it's still water with fruit syrup flavors poured in (like blackberry, etc.)

I agree. The same situation in Switzerland - the water in my hotel bathroom tastes like Aquafina! However, the other day I went to my Trader Joes and the Orangina they had on the shelf that particular day tasted truer to form. Maybe it has a short shelf life. Another good soda brand - Henniez. The orange one is similar to Orangina but tastes better to me, like it contains more juice. Another brand - Lorina, which comes in Orange, Pink Lemonade and Lemonade. Even better than the aforementioned, because the water is filtered in the Vosges Mountains.

missypie, more and more groceries are carrying Orangina. I saw it in a small tobacconist here in Portland..I am trying to break my addiction to it , so of course, I see it everywhere
