Wear something that makes you feel absolutely beautiful! Like a princess! If it's opening, choose something a bit more formal, like the other posters have suggested. However, on Sunday, I've a feeling it's not the opening and you can dress a little less formally. Jules gave great advice. Just make sure you will be comfortable and wear something lovely underneath and a smile on your face!
Oh yes, I have to comment that I sometimes become a little chilled and find it's nice to have a drape or shaw around my shoulders(or the warm arm or jacket of a good man).
And one other piece of advice, even though you didn't ask, eat a bit of something before you go. In my experience, an empty stomach can be very distracting.
I do love the opera!

As a long term Met subscriber and one who has been to Fenice, LaScala etc.... I'd say.. don't worry. If you are sitting in good seats just wear something dark and sedate. You may be underdressed but you won't feel uncomfortable. But this reminds me of a funny story: last year on a nite at the MEt(NYC) the weather was terrible and my arthritic knees were not in good shape. I said to DH.. "I'm wearing my sneakers (black)..(with a nice pants suit) and let's hope we don't see anyone we know." It was a makeup performance from our subscription so we were seated in seats other than our regulars. As I entered the aisle.. I saw a woman approaching from the other end of the aisle... Was a neighbor from our building!! A lovely woman I don't know all that well but like a lot. After our mutal exclamations we found that we were BOTH wearing sneakers-

Well, thanks for the info, Scarlett. I feel sorry for the poor guy. I, for one, wouldn't put up with her arrogance. But, that's just me.
Yes, her ample wit is as hilarious as it is cheeky. However, she comes across a tad nasty and unkind. And I don't usually have much respect for people like that, no matter how much wit they display.
That said, I have only read about 10-12 of her posts. I could be wrong. She could be a sweetheart.
