What to wear to dinner in Positano?

Calling all people who are obsessed with what they wear when they travel- what is the "dress code" for dinner in the evening in Positano? Also, what about restaurants like Il Retrivo, which is outside of Positano? Would like "code" for both men and women. Thanks

I guess it depends on the time of year. We ate many a meal in Positano last June and plan on repeating that again this year. Positano is casual. I wore a skirt and sandals and cute jewelry, and my husband wore khakis and a polo shirt and loafers. We felt just fine in those clothes. We ate at Il Retrovo and wore the same. That is a wonderful place to eat, by the way. Yum! (I was told no shorts last year by those on this board and at the last minute threw one pair into my suitcase. Was I glad I did!! It was Africa hot and many people were VERY casually dressed, including bathing suits and cover-ups. I changed from my capris and blouse the first hour we were there and threw on the shorts and a T. I was very glad to have those shorts! (Not for the cities, though.)

My husband is an attorney and when not working will wear nothing but jeans, that's all he packs for europe and we have been to Positano on 2 different occasions for 3 or 4 nights each, eating in different restaurants and he wore jeans to everyone and I usually wore shorts or slacks. I noticed most people were wearing the same. There are always a few that seem to have to dress to the 9's (my cousin is one) but it is definitely not necessary in Positano.

It is the overall appearance that matters, not the single pieces you wear. Jeans are o.k. if they are "smart". Polo shirt is very good. Pay attention to the shoes. Italians wear very good leather shoes even with jeans. Loafers will be perfect.

Areala, doesn't your husband find jeans too hot in Positano ? What time of year do you go ? I've always visited the Amalfi Coast in June or September and can't imagine wearing jeans. For dinner, I tend to wear a cotton dress and my DH wears a linen suit and t shirt - maybe a little smarter than necessary but very easy to wear (and he can't do without a jacket for his bits & pieces).

We're leaving next week for Positano, and according to weather.com, the temperature at night is about 58 degrees, which should be fine for jeans or khakis..Again, thanks to all for your input.
