A Few Questions on Switzerland

Hello, we have finally decided on 5 nights
Interlaken, 3 nights Lucerne for end of May. We are staying at the Victoria-Jungfrau and wondered which train station, East or West, to get off on. Also, best way to this hotel from train station? In Lucerne, we are staying at DesBalances and wanted to know if there is more than one train station and how to get to hotel from there? Husband has a bad knee so we don't want to walk with luggage. Any tips on what clothing to bring for end of May would be appreciated too. Thank you all.

The Victoria-Jungfrau is in my estimation about smack in between the two stations, which are about one mile apart. turn left from West station, turn right when coming out of East station all trains terminate at East - those from Luzern over the Brunig Pass and those from Spiez/Bern coming from the west. (Track sizes are different - no train going over Brunig Pass can physically go beyong East station - no train coming from west can physically go beyong East station. Second though Victoria-Jungfrau may be a tad bit closer to East station and is certainly a better walk from there as from West you have to navigate cluttered sidewalks of the shopping area - more pedestrian oriented paths from East.

Hi dancer0707,

Unfortunately, the V-J website doesn't give very good instructions on where to exit the *train*! But I looked at the maps at the Interlaken Tourism site, and it looks to me like the hotel is just about equally between the stations, maybe marginally closer to the Ost station (actually the stations are so close together, you can walk from one to the other in about 10 minutes).

But since you don't want to walk at all, this shouldn't be a concern -- just take a taxi. Shouldn't matter much which station you catch the cab from. May be more taxis at the Ost station, which is the major one for trips up to the mountains.

There is only one train station in Luzern. Take a taxi to Des Balances. It's close enough to walk, but when you arrive and don't know your way, and have luggage, it's just easier to take the taxi. Luzern's station is a big one, and you'll always find a taxi there.

It'll be cold & wet in the mountains in May. Bring a medium-weight sweater and a raincoat with a warm lining -- should be ok.

Have fun!

OK to walk around in jeans and sneakers at Victoria-Jungfrau's public places? (I know one restaurant is jacket and tie) Hoping just to bring casual clothes. Thanks again.

You are in for a treat in staying at the Victoria-Jungfrau. Ask for a front room with a small balcony and view of the mountains.

Casual wear is okay. Jeans will fit in with the tourist crowd. Try a banana split with fresh strawberries at Cafe Shuh across the street!!

Cheers,

Get off at Interleken West and take a cab.
If you go to Interlaken Ost, you will pay for the extra distance and end up no closer to the hotel.

If you take the train to Luzern, you leave from Interlaken Ost.

The Berner Oberlandbahn (BOB) also uses Interlaken Ost for its train.

Have had lunch at the La Terrasse and the Brasserie in past years and have
been very satisified with the quality
and service, etc. The La Pastateca seems to be open mostly when the La Terrasse is not. Have not stayed at the VJ however it is about 500 meters
to the Interlaken West and about 700 meters to Interlaken Ost and the Bob
taking you up to Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen, the train splitting at
Zweiluetscheinen.....The Des Balances is just out the front of Luzern Bahnhof
across the river bridge, to the left along the quai, about 300 meters in all.

On a nice day, go to the Metropole to have a cup of coffee and/or ice-cream at the Top-O-Met on 18th floor. Great view of Jungfrau.

The restaurant itself is not worth the money to have a dinner there, but the view is priceless.

I'm starting to envy you

For the Des Balances: walk out the front door of the station in Luzern and proceed to the lakeside. Turn left and walk to the second bridge crossing the river. At the other side turn left again and the Des Balances is right there.

One last question--this from my husband--our hotel in Switzerland has satellite TV. Does that mean it will get US programs or do we have to set our VCR at home for shows we will miss.
Thanks again!

Hi Dancer,

We also have satellite. It means you might get CNN or BBC stations and that's it. It all kind of depends on the set up.

Anyway, you shouldn't be watching TV anyway while your in Switzerland. You should be yodelling from the mountain tops with a fondue fork in your one hand and a cow bell in the other.

Enjoy Switzerland

>our hotel in Switzerland has satellite TV.
There's virtually no free US TV. (not that you'd miss it) CNN and BBC World are available, if they have a rather big dish they could get local UK TV, BBC and ITV on 28 deg East. FOX and FOX "News" are available on Italian, UK and Spanish pay tv. on 19 deg East.
