Is it too late to wear shorts in Italy?
Hubby wears shorts a lot when its warm. We leave for Italy(Rome, Positano, Ravello) next week. Should he bring them? The temps are to be in the low 70's with evenings in the high 50's. The temps are warm enough-but will everyone be wearing long pants?
Thanks for your help.

You might as well pack them, they won't take up that much room and he will have them for Positano. He will probably be the lone shorts wearer in Rome, but if neither one of you mind....he just can't wear them in some of the churches.

Just back from Positano, Capri and Rome. My husband wore shorts in Positano and Capri, but it was cold at least one day and he was uncomfortable and his shorts are long. It was a little too cold in Rome and nobody wears shorts there anyway.

Your husband could bring the kind of pants that zip into shorts. They are sold by retailers like Lands' End, L.L. Bean, and Orvis. They don't look as odd as you might expect, and have the advantage of washing and drying very quickly, always good on a trip.

Remember Italians dress very nicely (for the most part) and fashion is a big deal to them. I would NOT bring a pair of shorts for either a man or a woman. I was in Italy for 6 weeks (returned mid-month Sept) and never saw men and women in shorts. The women were wearing capri pants or skirts and the men pants. A pair of comfortable khakis (Eddie Bauer or Lands End comes to mind) for your husband should work fine and he won't stand out in the crowd!

i am in rome right now. it has been 80 degrees and sunny for the last three days and is supposed to be for the rest of the week. i was wearing capri pants and a linen shirt this morning and got so warm i came back to the hotel and put on a skort and tee shirt. most tourists are walking around in shorts and tee shirts or tank tops. the italians are wearing tweed blazers and scarves. if you or your husband want to wear shorts, go ahead. just don't wear them into churches.

Bring a pair. We just returned and my husband wore shorts a couple times when we were just hanging out and was glad that he had them. I brought shorts and never wore them - capri pants mostly. I strongly suggest packing "comfort clothes". We had a day of rain, and it was wonderful to throw on a comfortable sweatshirt and sweats and snuggle in bed to read or write in my journal.

If you don't mind being labeled a "tacky" tourist and could care less about the traditional cultural attitude regarding appropriate public attire, wear shorts on the street in Italy any time of the year.

Just returned from two week stay in Italy....Rome was warm but it was colder in Positano and particularly in Ravello.....in Ravello I wore thermals under pants with three layers of shirts to stay warm because it was quite cold and windy while we were there. It was all wonderful...enjoy your trip!

So much for weather forecasts. This morning in Rome it is in the 40s (F) and I'm in long pants, long sleeved shirt and suede jacket. The cold front that moved in last night is expected to stay around for a while. If anyone is coming to Rome in the next few days, bring some sweaters and a warmer jacket.
