My other solution for hiking flat muddy trails, over or through creeks / rivers is to wear my keen's.

https://www.keenfootwear.com/p/M-NEWPORT-H2.html

They were also my go-to hiking footwear while rafting the Grand Canyon, so suitable for desert trails. I would not use them where good traction is needed - steeper uphills or scampering over rocks. Rinse them out and they become dress sandals... sort of.

“Arc'teryx, although expensive, makes some attractive, packable overpants.”

i discovered their clothes 18 months ago and now rarely venture out without wearing something of theirs.

My Atom AR is stuck to my back permanently in all weathers.

These hiking tights are water repellent:

These pants are also water repellent and can be rolled up a few inches. Customer reviews say they are wind-proof (find that hard to believe) but not mosquito-proof (too thin).

Water repellent pants do not work with continuous rain. I had on water repellent pants but they still soak through. They are great for misty days but not rain.

" I so wish I had brought light weight rain pants! We had rain jackets but with the sideways rain our pants got soaked (as the rain drips off the jackets onto the pants). As soon as I got home I bought some for our next trip. They rollup small and don't weigh much so you could stick them in a pack and use as needed. "

Sberg: Do you have any suggestion what brand to look for with regards to rain pants? There are so many out there that I'm quite overwhelmed.

Thank you.

I have had great luck in rough weather with Marmot Precip rain gear. I think they may have a new model since I bought mine. They are light, pack well, dry quickly.

But it depends on what fits you of course! Other excellent brands include Patagonia, Black Diamond, and the above mentioned Arc'teryx.

Thanks Nelson for the recommendations.

I found the Marmot Precip to be what I'm looking for.

I would either go somewhere like REI where you can try on several brands or shop on a site that has a no-cost return policy (like Zappos). Lots of companies make good rain gear, but I find the fit and sizing are all over the place. As you may notice if you read the customer reviews...

Thanks for the recommendation, Sberg! I think I have that in my basket at amazon.

Jean...you're so right about sizing and fit. That's why, in this case, I like to shop at either stores because the return policy is generous and free. I will try brick and mortar stores too like REI or Dick's.

Thank you everyone!

What to wear in Scotland

A note of thanks to everyone. I have Marmot rain jacket, purchased pants and even those cut leggings recommended to me on this forum from REI.

Many thanks to all of you who responded. Leaving next week and cannot wait!

We rely enjoyed Scran & Scallie (run by the same restaurant group that has a Michelin starred place). Very casual but reservations are a must. Also enjoyed the variety in Grassmarket.
