What to pack for Italy?
A question for the female travelers out there... A girlfriend and I are taking a 2-week trip in June ambling across the Italian Mediterranean Coast with a 2-day stop over on the Isle of Capri. We don't want to stand out, but can't seem to find any information on how to dress comfortably for travel -- Italian-style. We will be mostly walking and expect modest accommodations and moderate dining experiences (i.e. we're not staying at the Ritz). Any suggestions?

I found "palazzo" style pants (light weight, print fabric, rayon or cotton, loose legs, elastic waist to be ideal. I wore nice looking but comfortable sandals (Sudini, Ecco, etc.) and a close fitting tank top, or knit top or t-shirt of coordinated colors. Capri length pants also work well. I usually take an extremely light weight black cardigan (silk knit) along in case it's cool in the evenings (wear it on the plane). I also carry little thin ankle socks for long days of walking if the sandals become uncomfortable. And of course if you are entering a church you need to have your shoulders and knees covered (no tank top that day or pull on a shawl or the sweater over).

Susan gave you good advice. Also bear in mind that the Italian Mediterranean coast in June is not Milan, the center of fashion in Italy; leisure wear is widely accepted. Simple floral skirts, short-sleeves shirts, Summer (long) dresses, capri pants, jeans, sandals and sneakers. If need to dress up a simple summer outfit, bring some accesories such as bright-colored scarfs to accesorize. Also, it is fashionable, especially in the summer, for women not to wear stockings. One dress code applies all year round, though; as Susan mentioned, absolutely no shorts or tank tops in churches, unless you covered shoulders & knees. Have a great time!

Susan and Maira -- Thanks to you both -- I have heard some "interesting" stories about American women being caught wearing less-than-appropriate outfits in Italy that wouldn't raise an eyebrow here in the states -- and you've just confirmed my caution. We'll play it safe with capris, sandals and twinsets. It's also great to know that bare knees and shoulders are a no-no in churches.. We'll go casual, but not too casual -- and I have you to thank!

Jennifer, glad to help! Have a wonderful trip. I'm busy working on my own wardrobe for Amsterdam and Switzerland leaving mid-June. I'll throw in one more (actually the very most important tip)... pack light!! Just know you'll have to wear the same stuff over and over & can wash out undies and lightweight tops with shampoo in the sink.
