What to do in Florence, Venice on a Sunday?

Hi, we will have one Sunday in Florence and in Venice during our trip. We are just wondering if all the shops in downtown will be closed. If so, what are some of the things we can do on Sunday in each of these cities? Should we make use of Sunday for museums?

Hi maxi. Anytime I have been in Italy I have used Sunday as sort of the "quite day". Walking, sometimes going to a mass, looking in shops if some are open, a late long lunch where Italians go with their families, walking in parks, outdoor cafes with people watching etc.

At home I like to sort of not have busy Sunday's as I start the week refreshed. And so this works for me on vacations too. You will have lots to do in Florence and Venice. Enjoy!

In Florence, a number of the state museums are open on Sunday, closed on Monday. Among them are the Accademia, Uffizi, and Pitti Palace. Others such as the Bargello and the Medici Chapels alternate closings on Sundays and Mondays (1st, 3rd & 5th Sunday, 2nd & 4th Monday).

In the morning, I went to mass at a couple of churches, as they were closed to tourists. But I didn't mind sitting through the services and observing. Then I walked around for a while.

In the afternoon, I took a walk through the Oltrarno up to Piazzale Michelangelo and attended the Gregorian chant mass at San Miniato. There's a good guided walk in the Eyewitness Florence book. I think it would be lovely to do this walk in the spring.

This was the day after New Year's and many museums were closed. However, in general many are open.

When I was in Venice during this past Christmas, Sunday seemed as busy as any other day, as did Christmas Day. A few places were closed but not many. Besides, you will wantsome time to walk and walk through this wonderful city so that you can absorb the atmosphere.

So as not to mislead anyone, here are the normal closing days for:

Bargello
1st, 3rd & 5th Sunday
2nd & 4th Monday

Medici Chapels
2nd & 4th Sunday
1st, 3rd & 5th Monday

Sorry that my previous post was not as detailed as it should have been.
