Eight trains an hour run from Gatwick in half an hour to Brighton. This seaside town (just made a city) has an area of narrow lanes with shops, restaurants and pubs, a pier, a seaside promenade, a good museum, and a royal palace in the Indian style.

[email protected]

with 8 hours you would have enough time to go either south to Brighton or north to London on the train. Either train trip would be 30-35 minutes. So if you have never been to London, go north and after arriving at Victoria Station you could decide what to do depending on what the weather is doing. If it is nice you can walk along the Thames, see Big Ben and ride the Lobdon Eye and have a nice lunch. if the weather is nasty you could go to the V&A, Somerset House, the National Gallery or some other inside activities.

Or - If the weather is nice when you land you could go south to Brighton - but I wouldn't advise that if it is stormy because you wouldn't want to walk on the piers, along the beach, etc.

There's a pub called the Wheat Sheaf a little bit south of Gatwick not far from a town called Hassocks that has a local beer that will give you such a headache . . .

another great place near-by is chartwell, winston churchill's country house which is now a museum...it is near Oxted in surrey....visit it and then have a nice pub meal...the small towns around there are quite nice for a visit..

you probably would have to rent a car for the day...

gatwick is somewhat issolated south of london....you really only have 2-3 hours less than you state for check-in and immigration, etc
