I am going to Spain by myself next month and a friend of mine, who I was told was a nightmare to travel with, asked to join me. Not wanting to hurt her feelings, I told her that this was something I really wanted to do by myself as I may never get the opportunity to do something like this again (with marriage and kids coming up soon). I also told her that others had asked to come with me as well and I told them the same answer (so as not to make her feel like it was just her). While she may have been disappointed, she said she understood and it has not been an awkward issue with us at all.
