What is there to do in Wales?
I'll be visiting my 22 years old sister during Thanksgiving in London. We've seen London a couple times and want to explore more of the Country. We were thinking of going to Wales for a few days. Besides the the castle in Cardiff, what other things are there to do? Would it be best to fly there or take the train from London?

I am english, but I love Wales, it brings back lovely memories of childhood holidays. Go to Snowdonia National Park (North Wales) it has the tallest mountain in Wales and England (Snowdon!) Not tall to US standards - and has a lovely beauty, 'green and pleasant'. The Welsh people are patriotic and proud of their country and heritage, I would say, so please respect that it is a seperate country to England, or it could cause offence. The beaches are gorgeous, lovely and sandy. I have experienced very good weather in Wales, but, as in England, it can rain! thats what keeps it green and beautiful. There are all manners of castles in Wales, Harlech and Carmarthen (I think thats correct spelling)spring to mind. It will be a complete contrast to London, which is all well and good. take the train---altho in england it is much easier to go north/south than east /west--we did this and stopped at the main castles--which are amazing--caenarvon, harlech, etc.---then there is a place called bodysgallen hall, whihc alos is fabulous if expensive in northwest wales--try to hear some singing performance too-the welsh love to sing

Hi
Cardiff is really good these days - lots of bars and restaurants in that's your thing. You should take the train - it's only 2 hours. Have a look at The Millennium Stadium (C'Diff), Cardiff Bay for lunch at the St David's Spa, St Fagan's Welsh Folk Museum if you like that kind of thing, see who's playing at St David's Hall or CIA, hire a car and drive along the coast towards St David's, fantastic coast in Pembrokeshire and Cardiganshire, have a look at Big Pit Mining Museum in Blaenavon, go to a Welsh evening in Cardiff Castle, go and see a rugby match, visit the Brecon Beacons National Park (car needed), visit the market towns of Hereford (not Wales, but nearly), Abergavenny, Crickhowell (some lovely country houses to stay), Brecon, Builth Wells (not sure when the agricultural show's on), Snowdonia NP (NB - quite difficult to get from South to North Wales). Have a fab time, and welcome.

Hi Jamila
Frances here. I am so chuffed that someone has found my info useful.
Can I just add to a couple of things said already
Snowdon doesn't unfortunately have the highest mountains in the British Isles but they are spectacular. At least I thought so until on the Columbia Icefield Alberta last week our guide Mike from Casino Vancouver Island asked where we were from. When we said Wales he said(excuse the quantum leap)"Scotland and Ben Nevis- a towering 4000 feet! That's by the way!
THE famous castle is at Caernarfon(not Carmarthen)Carmarthen does have the remains of a castle but its a "blink and you miss it" job.By the way "Caer" means castle or fort The train line doesn't run to Caernarfon you take a train to Bangor (from the East) and finish the 9 mile journey by bus-quite frequent.
The Royal Welsh Show in Builth Wells is about 3rd week in July
Anyway what do you want to know? What are your interests.Tell be and I'll be back
Frances
