I think you will find that more and more apartment rentals and hotels do have free WIFI connection.
The Paris Perfect apartments that I rent all have free WIFI and free telephone to US and a great many other countries.
I go for at least a month and think I would be lost without my lap top. I can do whatever banking, personal business, plus all my email with it. We seem to be lost without our internet connection, in the world today!

It sure is a dream of mine to stay in Paris for a month or two. I will be very interested in seeing how easy it is to access and use US websites from there. That access sure would make taking an extended stay there easier. I do work but I am self employed. I could manage to be away for a month if I could still get some work done there.
I haven't been to Europe in almost 10 years...I can't believe it's been that long. So I'm not totally clear on how that internet access will work. I know from time to time I have gone to British websites from here and had problems. Does anyone have those kinds of issues from there?

Sooosally,
What are you not clear about? WiFi is wifi if you're at home or in Europe. The city of Paris offers free internet access all over the city. Have a look at their website. MacDonalds have free Wifi, many cafes do and if you still can't find a connection jwire.com lists probably a couple thousand in Paris and Ile de France alone.
2 summers ago we rented an apartment on Ile St Louis... it came with free Wifi. But I could also pick up more than half a dozen open wifi networks. Ditto for Athens last spring.
So don't worry... you won't have any trouble getting online in Paris!

Except for the quality of the connection provided by individual internet service providers, there's no difference among my experience with American, British, French, German, Belgian, or Dutch web sites.
If your computer is set up to automatically select from whatever networks are available when it boots up, you won't even know (for the most part) that you aren't at home. The exception is if a for-pay network insinuates itself into your connection, in which case you will have to go to Network Connections in Windows XP and select a different one.

I had really forgotten that the city of Paris has installed a city wide WiFi network. I had heard that. Wasn't the case the last time I was there. That will be great!! I will probably leave my laptop at home and just rely on the Ipod Touch this time.
Sorry if I wasn't clear. I do understand that a WiFi network is a WiFi network. I have gone to British websites before and been denied access. It hasn't happened in the last six months for sure but it hasn't been 10 years ago either. I would get an error message that indicated you had to access it from inside Great Britian. I don't remember exactly what the message said. But somehow it recognized that my IP address was international..I guess that's how it knew. I'm just guessing though. So I was wondering if that would be the case, in reverse. For instance, if I'm in Paris and try to acces my banks network to move money between accounts or something like that, is that going to be a problem?

SoooSally,
I do everything in Paris with my laptop that I do at home. Do whatever with banking and everything else. I pay bills, check credit cards, everything. Only thing I sometimes miss, is having a printer. I don't plan on getting one for travel, either.
I think it would be difficult for long stays not to have access to all these things.
I use a different email for travel, but check my home email occasionally. I also tell friends not to send humor etc. to home email address to clutter it up. I check home mail regulary and clean it up. Otherwise you go home to tons of mail!
Go to Paris, and do your work from there!!

Just one thing. There are security issues with WiFi connections. Better to pay bills and buy things with credit cards only when you have a cable connection, maybe in your hotel room?
Wrong, wrong, wrong.
A correctly-configured wireless connection is no less secure than a wired one. Sensitive financial transactions, etc. are encrypted by your browser before the data leaves your computer, regardless of how it gets out on the net.
1. Always have a firewall running.
2. Always have an anti-virus running.
3. Send sensitive data only to https:// addresses.
