Hello nytraveler,if you were referring to my post when I commented about rain and electrical storms around the middle or so of September in northern Italy I did so as it was so cold everyone's teeth were chattering, lol. Also, roads were flooded and it was difficult to go anywhere. I have always been fine, thanks to friends there regardless of the weather as I have the advantage of staying with various friends in their homes, eating, drink wine, visiting etc. But during those various storms I sure would have been bored if I was "stuck" in a hotel and had to go to restaurants to eat etc.
Italy is beautiful no matter what, but having mild weather certainly makes the visit more enjoyable unless you are there to visit friends.

I think it will depend on where you are going exactly - we've traveled in May and in September. September in Southern Italy and Sicily is hotter than you might think and early May in the northern areas can still be quite cool. Check the average temps for a particular city to get a better idea. But I much prefer April/May or September/October to mid-summer, no matter what the location.

I prefer the springtime in Italy because there are very few crowds and no heat. That said, you can have windy days but nice, mild weather. September is still often hot so I think you are best planning for early/mid May before the summer crowds come.
