Helvetia e Bristol, if you want to be a true snob. My Aunt Judith always stays here while in Florence. I have stayed at the Savoy in Repubblica. It is a very grand hotel in the European style. However, the staff is not as gracious as say, the Oriental or Connaught. Even the maids at the Savoy are officious. Cafe Gili, across from the Savoy is fabulous for people watching and a nosh. An old friend, Constanza, stayed at Villa Cora last year and raved about the place. It is outside of the city, though.

One of my choices would be La Villa San Michele in Fiesole. Breathtaking indeed! Michelangelo statues are among their amazing art collection in their gardens and scatterd throughout the villa. This is a place where Italians go when they want luxury. The area will haunt you in your dreams for the rest of your life.

If you choose a more centrally located hotel, you should still visit Fiesole and Villa San Michele. Lunch on the terrace will be a memorable experience and will run about $100 per person. Worth every euro!

As Thin mentioned, the Savoy is a good choice if you want to be right in the middle of it all. They recently underwent an extensive renovation which they desperately needed. Bar Gili across the street is great for coffee and snacks, but don't sit down at the tables! BTY, they have one of the nicest restrooms in down town FL. There is a good little restaurant near by called La Posta. Excellent Lobster Raviolli and a good Pinot Grigio selection. There are other regal hotels up near Piazzale Michelangelo, but you will need a car or familiarize yourself with the buses in order to get up and down the hill. Taxi are always an option too.

Just thought I might add that the Michelangelo suite with the four poster bed is my top choice at Villa San Michele d/o, but I think a standard room sells for approx $800 per night d/o.
