jenblase,
I made a mistake, sorry! The company that reps Le Palais de la Mediteranee is Leading Hotels of the world at: www.lhw.com NOT Small Luxury Leading Hotels of the World. I often confuse the two!

I have to ask what was the best part of your stay at the Palais Med besides the location in Nice? We did consider the hotel but it looks like an Embassy suite with a collumnar facade. We were afraid it would have a Las Vegas feel in the rooms when we're looking more for an understated grand hotel. So please enlighten me what the bedrooms & guests were like. We saw so many guests wearing shorts & sandals as we passed by the hotel which is completely in the other extreme of the Hermitage.

The hotel itself in my opinion is far from an embassy suites. Really cool art deco lobby. Rooms i thought were fab. We had a view of the hills of Nice with a balcony which was beautiful. Room decor really bright also deco done in ochre fabrics and dark wood. Great amenities, large bathroom, beds super comfy and nice turn down service. It was a plearsure to come back there every night. I stayed at the Savoy in Florence on the same trip and the Palais was right up there. I was there in Feb. so no beachwear walking around. Most guests were Europeans, alot of French and German ,but that could have been time of year. Not a Grand old style hotel more like a large scale boutique in it's decor. But then again I'm not into antique furnishings or old style places I tend to go for sleeker design elements. Really liked the Deco feel. Would stay there again in a heartbeat, plus concierge Fabrice was a great help.

We stayed at The West End Hotel next door to The Negresco. We looked out our window and could see the sign for The Negresco and facing a garden. Sure there are ocean view rooms. It is right across from the beach on 31 Promenade des Angelis. We found it a nice hotel in your price range. It does not have a pool, but a very helpful staff. Breakfast is not included. It is easy to walk around the city from here. You would enjoy taking the tram car that goes to the top of the mountain overlooking the city. The train station is a few blocks away that makes it easy to travel to Monaco for the day.
We found the rooms to be clean and had an enjoyable stay.
Google West End Hotel for further info.

DAX,
Le Palais de la Mediteranee is actually a renovated art deco residence. The hotel and rooms are far removed from the feel of Las Vegas, although there is a casino on the 4th floor. I think the description of it by a previous poster as a "large scale boutique hotel" is absolutely perfect.
The clientele at the hotel was typical of what we've found at other hotels in Nice during the summer months including The Negresco- everyone from fashionistas to people wearing shorts and sandals. It's one of the reasons why we prefer Nice to Cannes. There's much more a feeling of inclusion, rather than pretentious glitz.
We'd definitely return to the hotel if we can still afford it! The rooms, food, and service were excellent.
