What is the "best" hotel on the French Riveria for under $400 USD a night?
I know the term "best" is subjective but I would like some recommendations for a hotel on the French Riv that has sea views and has beach access (or is less than 10 minutes from a beach). A nice pool area would be a plus. Does not need to include breakfast as I would rather not eat at the hotel anyway. Would prefer to spend $300-$350 a night but willing to go up to $400. We'll be there May 31st - June 3rd, which is pretty much high season.
This is for our 2.5 week honeymoon, and we would like to splurge (relatively speaking) for the last three nights of our stay while on the French Riveria, before we fly out of Nice. Thanks! |
The Intercontinental Cannes has a 320 euro rate available for those dates. I stayed at the Hilton nearby, but would love to stay at the IC.

You may want to check Relais & Chateau website. These chateaus and hotels are often small and gives intimate feel. Some of them are very luxurious.

We stayed at Le Palais de la Mediterranee in Nice last July, and really liked it. We had a lovely though not large room with an extremely comfortable bed, excellent AC, and a terrace facing the sea. The only weird thing is, as I've posted before, the hotel was recently renovated in such a way that your view is somewhat obstructed by large pillars at the top of the hotel.
Anyway, the hotel has a small but useable pool area and health club, as well as a casino on the 4th floor. Food is served at the restaurant on the pool level, or near the casino, and all of it was excellent. The hotel also provides access to a beach just across the street, but as is the case with most of the hotels in Nice, you have to pay extra to use it! I almost forgot- the hotel is only about a 10 min. walk from Vieux Nice, which is one of my favorite parts of town. Another hotel to check out is LE PEROUSE, which is located on the edge of Vieux Nice. Le Perouse is a very popular hotel, too, and often gets rave reviews here online. |
First of all, congratulations and best wishes for yor wedding!
I think that Hotel Negresco - Nice is very nice for honeymoon. It is a beautiful building (declared monument), like a palace, on the Promenade des Anglais and has its own beach. Another very good hotel is Carlton in Cannes, also with his private beach. However, I am afraid that both of them are some 50 euros above your budget, but... it is your honeymoon, 3 * 50 = only 150 euro more, if I were you, I would book Negresco! |
I already have a rate from the Palais de la Mediterranee for $360 USD a night - and they advertise it as "partial sea view" so it's probably with those pillars in front of it. If I want full sea view it's more like $550 USD a night, too much.
I am leaning towards that one right now since they're right in Nice (meaning easy transport for our 8:00 flight Sunday morning) and they seem to have all the bases covered for what we're looking for. |
valtor, the Carlton IS available at her price point for her dates (see second post)
jen, check out the website. There is not a better location (IMO) in Cannes. I agree with the Negresco in Nice. I'd book the Carlton NOW at that rate and then shop around later to see if you find anything you may like better. And, rent "To Catch a Thief" to get in the mood. |

I did not stay at La Perouse when I was in Nice but chose to stay in the delightful Le Grimaldi. However, when we were in Vieux Nice, I couldn't help but wish we had stayed at La Perouse, if only for the location. Has the sea-view, pool, etc. Really amazing location at the end of the Promenade des Anglais so you get the whole of the Baie des Anges stretched out in front of you. Good luck!

Just got a response from Le Perouse - 455 euros per night!! Wish I could, but I can't.

Hi worth ploughing through these hotels : http://www.the-languedoc-page.com/to...ritimes-06.htm

I have stayed at the Negresco and loved it, the location and the interior is beautiful. The restuarant Chanteclier is awesome as well. If you are going to San Tropez try Pastis Hotel. Also try www.chicretreats.com

I guess I'll be the voice of dissent here. We often go to Nice, and during our first trips back to the area, we stayed at Hotel Negresco, which was a huge disappointment. At that time, our partial seaview room was over $400/night, tiny, dirty, and unrenovated. The hotel staff could have cared less about us, and in fact was quite snobby. Hopefully it's changed in the last few years, but I have no desire to go back there- even if I could afford it!

FYI the Carlton is sold to Westin along with the Interconti in Paris. It is indeed a very nice hotel in terms of price value ratio. I just wished it's in Nice instead of Cannes.
|
Weadles, I have read some other unfavorable things about the Negresco - you are not the only one. I don't think I would stay there.

Hi Jennblase:
If you don't mind staying in Monaco, I just stayed at the Hermitage in Monte Carlo at the promo rate of 360 Euro. It's a block away from the casino and surrounded by upscale stores. Monaco is a bit too ritzy for me, it reminds me of Beverly Hills Rodeo Drive. Most hotel guests wear super designer brands down to their new luggage sets. If you are looking more for charm rather than glitz, try Chateau d'Eze. It's a lot more relaxed with a very picturesque setting. It's a hilltop village overlooking the Mediterranean Sea btw Nice & Monaco. It should be around $400 as well, which is much much less than what the nearby Hotel Chevre d'Or charge. |
jenblase,
Definitely let the hotel know that it's your honeymoon. Sometimes hotels will upgrade you or comp you with special deals, services, or things like wine, chocolate, and flowers in your room. Also, see if this hotel is still listed with SMALL LUXURY HOTELS OF THE WORLD. I got a great deal on Le Palais when I booked through that website a few weeks before our trip last July. Have fun, and congratulations! |
