I will be there the 17th - 26th - how would I go about getting to Reims? Is getting a eurail pass the way to go? They seem a bit pricey...THanks!

No, you do not need a rail pass. You can just take a local train. I did it a couple of years ago. Went down in the morning, toured city (cathedral, wine cellar..) and returned that night.

Two hours each direction. Leave from Paris - Gare de l'Est. Cost is about 22 euros return

Michael is giving you good advice. You can book about 90 days ahead. Look for PREM fares, you can get them for as little as €10 to Reims.

I think mid-October is a wonderful time to be in France. October and May are my favorites. Less crowds in October, I think.

NO, don't by a railpass! Just buy a ticket on a local train.

In October the new TGV Est line will have been inaugurated, so Reims will be 45 mn away from Paris (and not 1h35 as of now), 8 direct trains a day. The cost should go up to about 30 euros return full fare.

...which means you can go farther east than Reims if you want, to Metz or Nancy, for example.
