What does "without seat/reservation" mean on a train ticket/reservation?

Hello,
Thanks for all the advice so far! I have just started to book our train tickets in France and on the first reservation I made from Paris-Caen return, on the outward leg my two children have "without reservation" as their seat assignment. It assigned seats fine for the three other people in our group and we all got seats assigned to us for our return leg.

Do I have to now pay and reserve a seat for my two kids? Why wouldn't they have assigned seats right away for my kids? Do my kids actually have seats?? Any other thoughts?

Thanks for all your help?

BB

It means you have seat reservations, and don't need them.

You get on, and sit anywhere you like. Like the New York subway.

How old are your children and what kind of tickets did you purchase? You probably have tickets on an Intercité train, reserved seats are an extra 5€. If your tickets are on a TER train, there are no reserved seats.

Sorry, I mean, it means you DON'T have seat reservations, and don't need them.

Intercités trains have reserved seats (albeit not obligatory like the TGV). TER trains have no reserved seats.

Hello,

My kids are 7 and 10. Both tickets are on Intercities "Leisure" trains. So it sounds like I need to get reservations for my kids? Don't know why I didn't need to do that for the "adult" tickets?

Is it easy to reserve seats online? I can't see anything in MyAccount, when I view the booking?

Thanks for all your help!!
