Hi there

Trying to work out Paris hotels for Sep, and am being thwarted by high prices and unavailable rooms for our dates. I was initially looking to stay in the 5th or 6th area exclusively, as we are are only effectively in Paris for about 3 days.

I have found this hotel which is reasonable and looks gorgeous, Hotel de la Porte Doree but it says its in 12e - I assume that means in the 12th?

How far away is that and what are thoughts on how feasible that is in terms of travelling times etc to museums etc?

The 12th is adjacent to the 5th, so no worries there. If you have a Metro map (and if you don't, you need to get one asap) you will see that on Metro Line 8 there is a stop called Porte Doree in the 12th. No doubt that is where your hotel is, or at least nearby. Line 8 will take you to transfer points where you can get to any of the sites which interest you. I say go for it. We never stay in the trendy arrondissements when we are in Paris - too expensive - but generally in the 11th or the 15th. I will check out Hotel de la Porte Doree for our next visit.

Read the reviews on Tripadvisor... this was a very popular hotel for a while, a couple years ago. The metro stop is very near to it.

Note: there is another hotel, Hotel Doree or something like that (no Porte), and it wasn't as nice so don't get them confused.

aarathi23 - Just got back from Paris and stayed 2 nights in the 5th.
On our walks around that area we came across this divine little hotel and went in and got their brochure for our next visit - which will be sooner than later!

September is a very busy month in Paris, tradeshows and upcoming fashion week etc. Its rates actually go up in Sept ..

Anyways check out "Hotel Du College De France", excellant rates, excellant location, and excellant reveiws, only problem is may be booked.

Also try Hotel des Mines, basic hotel on Boulevard St Michel in the 5th, rooms and bathrooms immaculate and have a/c , but very small. I have stayed there and it is cheap considering all the pluses( and disregarding the small rooms)Staff were great too.

Keep trying, you'll find something.

Oh , you could also check out Hotel Eugenie, I haven't stayed there, but location and prices are good ( 6th) and also Hotel Claude Bernard( where I am staying this July for 118 euros which includes breakie) also in 5th and well reveiwed.

I have stayed in this hotel. It is run by an American expat and her husband. I stayed there 5 years ago and wouldn't hesitate to stay there again, especially with the Euro/dollar exchange the way it is. The metro stop is right outside the door. The 12th is a more locals neighborhood with cafes and bakeries all around. it is a bit out of the center but with the metro right there (line 7) acces to the center is easy. No A/C. For a lower priced hotel I think this is a great value.

Thanks for all your responses - we are going to book our stay there. Yes its a bit out of the centre, but looking at the posts so far, it looks like it will be manageable.

Its quite funny though - I called them last night and she asked me to call back in an hour! First time a hotel's ever asked me to call back, I couldn't stop laughing.

Re the no a/c - will this be an issue in Sep? We'll be there mid-Sep..?

well after feeling like my head was about to explode after researching hotels for weeks and weeks and weeks, we've FINALLY booked into Hotel des Grands Hommes! Hurrah!
