We have pondered bringing back cat treats but the reality is that our cats would probably take an extreme liking to them and refuse to eat anything else so it's best for us to just not do it. It's bad enough that I have to order their normal cat food from Germany.

Cat food wins the prize!

We only bring foodstuff. Saffron, Tommy Mayo, Horseradish and Mustards in different spice levels, Cervolat, Dried mushroom mixes, maybe a jar of marmalade, and a couple of cans of fish preserves.

I do try to always bring a few small bricks of the UHT heavy/whipping cream (so incredibly useful and I can't get them here anywhere).

And of course, a bottle or two of wine; depending on the overall weight of the suitcases.

CDs with music. Rock/pop of our times, sung in the respective country's language. I do some research on youtube beforehand and make a shortlist with names of bands and singers I like. My current favourites are some excellent Polish ones. I suppose my neighbours are sometimes astonished about the kind of music they hear from my flat...

Good call on music. Mrs. sparkchaser always looks for CDs of local music, traditional music, and music of particularly good buskers.

Like Isabel, my primary souvenirs are photos, ceramics, and jewelry. Like traveller1959, my house is filled with objects that are associated with memories.

I have also bought books, music, scarves. I went through a French flea market stage to build a kitchen around the extensive collection of Quimper pottery I inherited from my grandmother, but I have stopped buying flea market stuff for the most part as I don't want to buy another house and I don't want to get rid of the stuff I already have.

I love my souvenirs. They are the physical and linguistic manifestation of my memories.

Usually: music, food/drink

Occasionally: art, perfume

I don't really enjoy shopping in general. And shopping while traveling just gives me anxiety. Browsing can be enjoyable, but contemplating an actual point of sale ruins it for me.

Shopping for consumables like music, food, drink, and perfume does not give me the anxiety that shopping for objects does. Not sure why. Less commitment maybe, less permanent.
