The Scavi tour must be booked in advance. Santa Susanna explains the process on their website and provides the e-mail link. Scroll down the page and read before trying to get tickets.
http://www.santasusanna.org/popeVatican/museums.html

I've also found the Santa Susanna information on "how to dine" interesting. It covers tipping in Italy and it's much different advice than you get on Fodor's. http://www.santasusanna.org/visitorInfo/howDine.html

They also have a list of restaurants by area with information on owners, food, etc., and which priests they are favorites of which I found interesting.

I don't see the point of paying Select Italy to do what you can do on your own. You can book several different guided tours (museum, gardens, etc.) directly through the Vatican. Make sure it's an English tour.

One word of caution, since there has been quite a bit of mention of the info on St. Susanna's web site. We tried one of the restaurants that they highly recommended...bad idea. It was reasonable in price, but that's about all I can say about it. So exercise caution.

Well, I consider myself to be fairly knowledgeable about the Rome restaurant scene, and I took a look at Santa Susanna's website-and I think it an EXCELLENT list-some of the best hosteria in Rome are listed, and some that are not written up in guidebooks, like La Canaccia, but others, like Hosteria da Nerone, Pancrazio, Tana di Noantri, dal Pompiere-all great places to go-I would recommend this list.

If you didn't check out the St. Susanna website ---- go back and take a look. An excellent website and a really fun read with lots of information. Being Catholic, I found it especially enlightening for the Basilica Mass times.

I don't think the restaurant recs are all by Santa Susanna. At the bottom of the page it mentions Sandra Gustafson's book and gives an e-mail address for anyone that wants to add a restaurant.

It's important that first time visitors read Eloise's post above. If someone wants to take a tour, fine. But, don't expect them to get you through lines any faster than you can do on your own.
I just love how one tour company advertises how they can speed you through Vatican lines. You book with them and they tell you the tour starts at 12:30! Duh, you didn't need to book with them to have short lines at 12:30.

The Scavi tour, the Vatican gardens,Borghese, Palazzo Farnese, Nero's house (still closed I believe) and the rare evening private tours of the Vatican museum are the only sites that I can think of.
You do not need to reserve your tickets for a papal audience. You can visit the Santa Susanna church (not far from the Termini) and get them there. I recommend you go to their website http://www.santasusanna.org/popeVati...peVatican.html
for information and to make sure there is an audience.

Went to book reservations for The Borghese on their web site and it only shows September 15. Site does not give me an option to pull up October. Does anyone know if they only list a few weeks in advance. Trying to reserve for October 26, 2006.

Yes, they only do a few weeks in advance, I'm not sure how many but you can get a basic idea by figuring todays date and how far out they are booking now.
