I just returned last night from Germany, that's what I'm doing up in the wee hours.
We rented a compact from AutoEurope to be picked up at the Heidelberg Avis office. The car was a Opal Mervino (?) and it was a perfect little car. Not too small but it fit nicely in small spaces but it was tall so I didn't feel squished in. Of course, it couldn't beat an Audi but that's okay.
This was the same model that we drove last March in Germany and rented through Budget. On that trip we used Budget because they didn't charge a drop off fee and on this trip we returned the car to the same location so the drop off fee didn't matter.
Auto Europe had the best deal this time.
We used a credit card that covered insurance and so did not used any coverage offered by the company.

Thank you all for your advice and comments!
HAS ANYONE USED THEIR CREDIT CARD COVERAGE FOR CDW INVOLVING MISHAPS WHEN RENTING/DRVING A CAR IN ITALY?
If you do not get full coverage and your credit card coverage does not apply what happens if you have an accident? Would love to hear from someone who has had this kind of experience.

Use the 800 number at www.gemut.com and talk to a real person, not just a scripted reservationist. These guys have been doing it for years and will steer you to the best deal. VERY knowledeable. If I find a lower rate on the Web they will beat it. Also, on my last rental I got overcharged by Hertz in Germany, but one call to Gemut and they immediately got Hertz to issue a credit. Guess they have juice.
