We walked from our hotel to the Spanish Steps, climbed to the church of Trinita dei Monti, turned around to look at the view and right at the end of Via Condotti we were greeted with the most beautiful crescent moon. It was right after sunset and the sky was ablaze with purple and pink colors. Pure magic. Naturally I had a gelato to celebrate this heavenly sighting.

Newtonewyork! Will this be your first trip to our lovely island? (of course, I live in Manhattan and the people on the mainland parts might get perturbed with my description!)You'll find that New York is just as wonderfully complex as Rome.. just in a different way; and doing one's "homework" will definitely enhance the experience. I lived in NYC for many years before I traveled abroad. But once I started I found the greatest cities to be my favorite places. Every one is so similar and so different!!

As mentioned before, overlooking the city from the top of St. Peter's. Walking from the metro stop to St. Peter's with the anticipation building and walking into the square and seeing the statues and also hearing the bells.Walking into the Colliseum and thinking of all that went on there. Seeing all the families out at night having fun. Moms, dads, grandparents and children all enjoying themselves.
Like it used to be here in the United States.Could go on and on.

Maybe not my favorite, but my biggest Rome memory.

Arrived in Rome by train from Austria in 1989. Had to use the restroom which had the old enclosed toilets with a locking wood door. The "fixture" was a porclein floor with raised foot prints and a hole to squat over.

After doing the dead I pulled the overhanging cord to flush, but it was a cord to get a shower. I got a full shower with all cloths on plus my backpack.

I tried to open the door but it was stuck, so I was shouting for help. I didn't get any help at first so I looked through the key hole to see if anyone was there.

At that moment someone kicked in the door and knocked me on my butt. All the guys in the men's room were laughing at me as I was soaking wet on the floor. Totaly embarrasing but a great true story!

It is so hard to pick just one favorite. But for me, to see the works of Bernini was amazing. Visiting the Galleria Borghese was so awesome. Words cannot express the impact of seeing his sculptures.

I thought of another memory. We got to see the Pope say Mass in St Peter's square on June 29th. The feast day of St. Petr and St. Paul. It started at 6:00 pm and went until about 8:10. That was a bonus.

A few:
We dropped our bags at our hotel and wandered jet-lagged but excited over to the Pantheon and sat down on a bench against the wall to look up and admire the dome and to rest. I remember laughing at my wife because she fell asleep, and then falling asleep myself.

Looking out over the Forum at sunset.

Caravaggio, wherever he hangs.

A walk along the Tiber at night.

Borghese Gardens and Gallery.

All of it.

The first time I saw Piazza Navona at night. The Church of Saint Agnes was open and being rededicated on the same night. Porcini mushrooms sauteed in butter two nights in a row. Inside the Pantheon during a rainstorm.

One of my favorite memories is of the first time I walked out of our hotel which was near the Vatican. We checked in, and walked along the river under the trees and then stood on the bridge with the statues and just took it all in. It was a warm, sunny, Fall day and the leaves were blowing down the paths and across the bridge as we stood watching the river flow along. I get a thrill just remembering that one moment in time.

I have to agree with PamSF. We've been to Rome several times and it has become a custom to start out our first night with dinner at DaBaffetos, having pizza and chianti and going to Piazza Navona to look at the art work and people and to have tartufo at Tre Scalini for dessert. That's a perfect night.

It has to be when on my first visit to Rome and the driver was bringing us in from the airport to our hotel.

I was looking out of the side window, sleepily and jet lagged, my friend tapped me on the shoulder and pointed out the front window at the Colosium. It just took my breath away, having seen pictures of it all of my life, and then having it right in front of me!
I got tears in my eyes realizing that I was finally going to experience Rome with all of its history.

Coming across the Vittorio Emanuelle Monument on our first night. It was breathtaking to just come across it like that.
