I've always been a checker-inner anyway. So far (knock on wood) never had a problem.

I don't think changing to a stick deodorant, rather than gel, is going to assure you can carry it on, but maybe it might help. A lot of places are not allowing stick-like cosmetic products on the plane, and that would include a stick deodorant, it doesn't seem any different to me than a lipstick, for example. This is what TSA says for US to elsewhere:

<<Some solid or powdered cosmetics items are permitted past the checkpoint; however, this is left to the discretion of the Security Officer. To minimize delays and hassle, we recommend that you pack all cosmetics in your checked baggage. These polices apply to ALL flights departing from or arriving in the United States.>>

Me too, always check my bags. I've never wanted to put that much thought into packing.
I've never had my luggage lost. But I guess it only takes one time to convert to the carry-on only rule.

On our recent trip to Europe, we checked everything in our baggage except for our MP3 players and hoped and crossed our fingers that our luggage wouldn't get lost.

Included in our luggage, we checked:
-our expensive camera
-our car keys

Luckily, all went well and we didn't lose our luggage.

It's the 'discretion' that gets me. I want my chapstick. I have a feeling I'll be the one arrested for trying to sneak chapstick past a discriminating TSA officer.

You could buy cake mascara from Amazon.com. I just received mine the other day and I actually like it better than all the liquid mascaras I have tried in the past. No clumping and easily applied.

Just can't stand to check the luggage - so have decided to check one tiny bag with all the liquids/makeup, etc. Carry on everything else. Husband flew last week with checked bags - bags didn't make it home with him. They showed up later - but don't want that happening next week on the trip out. Can deal with it on the way home.

Hey blh, I was thinking of doing the exact same thing. Just checking a small bag with the stuff that's banned but carrying on my clothes. I'm so used to carrying on everything that I hate the thought of checking anything, even my deo!

PLEASE unless the airline MAKES you do NOT check
"-our expensive camera
-our car keys"

The airline is NOT under ANY circumstances going to reimburse you for lost Expensive camera or car keys. (On my Saab a car key replacement if you don't have an orignal is over $1,000!!!! and I cannot disconnect the electonic fob, it's part of the key!)

If the TSA makes me check the camera it won't go. When the Brits locked out laptops last month, my company notified all travelers in the UK to take the train to either Brussels or Paris and fly home from there at the companies expense since there were no procedures to safeguard the laptops.

(And if I am in Europe and one of the idiot rules breaks out I will pay to have my Canon Digital Rebel shipped via an insured carrier not in my bag for the TSA or ground crews to steal!)

I have traveled in the USA and decided to check my bag. So far so good. But my friend sends her supplies to her destination prior to travel. Maybe you could send your make up etc. to your hotel before you arrive. The Westin is a great company and would probably accomadate your package.

Just curious. I use Bare Escentuals Mineral makeup powder. Does anyone know if these products have been banned on US flights to and from Italy or France? I was planning to carry mine on...but now I'm not sure. I fear mineral makup may not be readily available and I have issues with conventinal makeup.

Raindame,
When are you going? I was thinking about this myself and I use the same brand. I have a trip in October (US only) and I think I am going to "try" to carry it on.... I have some sample size things that I can put in my carryon and put the bigger ones in my checked luggage just in case.

(And of course since I fly out of ATL IF they TSA takes the stuff I can just go buy more over on the T concorse. SO far the VERY limited number of searches they are doing at the gates make me feel pretty certain I could get that on!)

Carol A,I'm departing ATL on Delta Sept 28 and returning October 15. We fly to Paris and from there on to Rome. I wasn't aware of BM being available on T concourse...not sure where we depart from but thanks for the info. Will you be departing before I return?

Anybody know how many bags you're allowed to take on the plane ?? - never mind what's going in them. I've already decided to bite the bullet and check my 22" inch suitcase with all the forbidden cosmetics.

Can you take a handbag (and does the size matter)?? Can you also take a carry-on tote for your camera, travel guide, non-forbidden cosmetics, etc.?

I have not checked in 25 years and am now checking a briefcase-sized bag with my liquids (hari stuff, make up) I still do not check my clothes or anything other than liquids/gels.

I figure if they lose that bag, it is easy to replace toiletries, but more difficult and time consuming to replace clothes and shoes.

Ready2travel--From Heathrow to US last week, the limit was 1 per person. All I was allowed was my large, flexible purse which fit in the "box" at checkin. My husband's small carryon would not fit because the bottom with wheels was too wide--so he had NO carryon. The bins on the airplane were empty and it sure made for a fast get-a-way when the plane landed!
I do not think all airports are as strict as LHR.

Raindame,
I don't travel until 10/14 so I won't be much help.....Sorry!

Also, I spent some time looking into this last night as I bought an el cheapo fare on DL for short winter break in London.

Going to Europe the rules on carry on size do not appear to have changed.

Returning from MOST of Europe, the rules have not changed.

Returning from the UK the rules are MUCH more restrictive. One fairly small bag. (The 22" is too big)

So unless the rules change no matter what I will be checking on the return. No biggie.

Raindame:
If you have a Sephora near you, you can check there for sample sizes of the Bare Escentuals.

CarolA:
You aren't alone! I know that DH would pay to ship his camera home before he would put it in checked luggage, and I don't care about delayed luggage on the way home, especially since it will be mostly dirty laundry!
