For General collections
Louvre
Prado
Met in NYC
National Gallery London
National Gallery DC
Heritage
Specialized collection
MOMA-the best modern art museum in the world
Tate Modern
Uffizi for Rennaisance
I have not been to the Rijksmuseum.
Many of the others mentioned are excellent museums but in the category of the above.
The Art Institute of Chicago has exemplars of many genres but does not have the depth of those cited above.
The Thyssen in Madrid was a personal collection with a great sense of history and art but once again not in the same class as the others.
Others like the Picasso Museum in Barcelona should not even be on the list of world class museums. It is interesting and instructive.
I know I am going to take a lot of heat but the I like the building od the d'Orsay more than the collection.

My favourite art museum--hands down--without an absolute doubt--so much so that I would be a happy man if I could spend my last hour on earth inside--is the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston.
