Weston Traveler - A Hotel de Varenne Report

Weston Traveler, My husband and I just returned from a wonderful vacation in Paris. We stayed at the lovely Hotel de Varenne on Rue de Bourgogne. You are going to love the hotel and the location. At one end of the street is the Assemblee Nationale and at the other end, The Rodin Museum and Gardens. Rue de Bourgogne has everything you need for your stay. There are two small grocery stores, a pharmacy, a wonderful Boulangerie Patisserie right next door, a couple of small restaurants, a dry cleaners, and a wine shop and an ATM machine very close. The hotel staff is very helpful with reservations and directions. The small courtyard is lovely and just perfect for a glass of vin or cafe at the end of a day of sightseeing. We are over age 50 so we enjoyed the quiet courtyard area. You can walk to many sights and there is a wonderful view of the Eiffel Tower (good for the 10 p.m. light show) just two blocks away at the Invalides Metro station. The neighborhood is very safe, even at night. The hotel is small, only 24 rooms. Our room was small but very nicely decorated with a king-sized bed. The bathroom was very modern and ultra clean. Let me know if you need any more info. Have a wonderful trip!

Jane22,
I'm so happy you enjoyed the Varenne as we do. We're in our 50s as well, as we treasure the tranquility of the hotel. We love the staff, the quiet location and all the amenities the area provides. There is one small double in the hotel that has a view of the Eiffel Tower (well, just a peek), but I just run down those two blocks for the glorious light show!

Great news. I have booked five of us (three rooms) for seven nights during late December. Although I like the night life (I love to boogie...sorry disco flashback), I do like staying in a quiet area. Sleep is a good thing.

Although we will be roaming different areas for dinner, do you have the names, of the nearby restaurants that you could recommend? Merci.

My husband and I stayed at the Hotel de Varenne about 3 weeks ago. I agree with Jane, this is a great hotel.

Our room (#42)was large by Europe standards, had a king-size bed, mini-fridge, TV, desk and two chairs. Plenty of storage for luggage. The bathroom was quite nice and decent size as well. The room faced the street, but noise wasn't a problem with the windows closed. Price was 155 euro per night. Breakfast is an extra 10 euro, but there are lots of breakfast/bakery options within easy walking distance.

The location can't be beat. We'll definitely stay there again on our next trip to Paris!

I forgot to add a restaurant recommendation for maitaitom. We only ate one night in the immediate area at Cafe Thoumieux, 4 rue de la Comete.

Very traditional brasserie type atmosphere with food to match. Reasonably priced (prix fix menu less than 25 euro if I recall correctly). Food is not out of this world, but classic and delicious. We were there early by Paris standards so it wasn't crowded and we didn't need reservations. Not sure how it would be later in the evening around 9:00pm because we were gone by then.

maitaitom,
Yes, please reserve at Auguste (formerly Les Glenans), right up the street! It's a top flight gourmet restaurant with a 35 euro menu at lunch, more at dinner. Rue de Borgogne 54. The chef hails from Le Meurice. But closed on wkds.
phone: 01 45 51 61 69

Also within easy walking distance is Le Petit Laurent, which is frequented by politicos from the Assembleé Nationale at lunch, very serene at dinner. Rue de Varenne 38.
phone: 01 45 48 79 64 Classy, classy.

Our favorites in the 7th, all within walking distance (but we're avid walkers) are:

Chez L'ami Jean on rue Malar 27 (former sous chef at La Regalade)

L'Affriole at rue Malar 17. Wonderful value for the money. One we always return to.

Le Florimond (seems to be everyone's favorite on the forum) at 19 av de la Motte Piquet

Cafe Constant at 139 rue St. Dominique, owned by the chef of Le Violon d'Ingres.

La Fontaine de Mars at 129 rue St Dominique Oozing quaint Parisian bistro ambience, but always packed, always a wait for a table, but the terrace seating in summer is worth the wait.

Les Ormes , 22 rue Surcouf, cuisine by Stephane Mole, a disciple of Robuchon.

Au Bon Accueil at 14 rue Monttessuy, literally in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower, with a few sidewalk tables set up in summer under the tower's magic spell.

Le Maupertu at 94 La Tour Maubourg, across from the Invalides.

Nabuchodonosor at 6 av. Bosquet (very good value prix fixe at lunch)

Bellota-Bellota at 18 rue Jean Nicot for casual but impeccable Spanish fare serving melt-in-your-mouth jamón ibérico platters, terrific gazpacho to accompany the platters, delicious cheeses and bread from Poujaran. Great fun.

Le Clos des Gourmets at 16 Avenue Rapp (what a tony block!) Charmingly run by a husband and wife team. (This is actually our very favorite of the above).

Rm #42 is one of two of our favorite rooms at the Varenne. The other is the cozy (but large by Parisian standards) dormer room #38 (pictured on their web page).
Room #41 is the small double with the Eiffel Tower view (or peek).
The other larger street side rooms are #12, #22, #32.

Have fun!

Jane22-
Thank you so much for posting upon your return! I am glad that you had a wonderful vacation and that the hotel was so nice. And thanks to everyone for feedback on the hotel! I feel a lot more comfortable now, and am looking forward to staying there. We have a superior twin reserved-has anyone seen those rooms?

Did you use Mastercard at the hotel? On another thread, someone mentioned that the hotel was unable to process his Mastercard, and he had to use a different credit card.
Also, do you know if there is internet access from the rooms?
Thanks everyone!!!!

We did not use a Master Card; however, we had no problem with our Visa at the hotel. My husband also used his American Express card at several restaurants with no problem.
The hotel does have internet access in the Lobby area. Thanks everyone for responding with good restaurant/cafe suggestions. We also ate at Le Petit Laurent and found it to be good for a late lunch. A couple of nights, after walking all day, we just picked up dinner and wine (the best quiche I've ever eaten at the bakery next door!) and ate in the hotel courtyard.

Thanks very much for this hotel review. We look forward to trying it next time we're in Paris--looks a bit like the Madison, but with better prices.

Underhill,
That's exactly how we feel. We were loyal Madison devotees until the rates for our favorite room 36 soared beyond our usual budget. While we sometimes miss having St. Germain right at our doorstep, it is walkable, and we now love the small and classy Varenne. We've become are as happy there as we had been at the Madison, for a much more affordable price.

For anyone considering the Varenne, we've taken advantage of their Jan-Feb. winter specials and their mid-July through August promotional rates. For this summer the rates for superior doubles and twins have been lowered from 167 to 149 and include breakfast.
