Wernigerode

Can anyone recommend an Apartment (Ferienwohnung) in or around Wernigerode, Germany in the Harz. And do you think it would be necessary to book beforehand.
We will be arriving second week in May.
Thanks for your help

Norsky - I've found that you have a really good chance of finding town/city info by typing, in this case,
www.wernigerode.de, usually if you put the city/town name then .de (for Germany) it'll work. When you click into the above on the left is a menu, click on Tourismus, then the next page you'll find accomodation info, there is a ferienwohnungen...mehr, just click into that. Good luck

Contact the tourist information in Wernigerode. Best: phone. They know all places and can recommend the one that suits you best. I found them extremely helpful. I had a really cute little apartment there two years ago which they booked for me. The name of the owners, a very friendly couple, was Ramme, and they breed orchideas (the Tourist Info people will know immediately which one it is). It's situated in a quiet little street, close to the old town and a 10 minutes walk from the train station, so the location is perfect. The apartment is quite small - I was on my own, so that was fine, don't know how many of you are travelling. It will be all right for a couple but too small for a family. A bedroom, another room with kitchen and dining table etc., bathroom and a little terrace outside which has a view of the Brocken. I spent two entire weeks there for business reasons (yes, some people actually have business in Wernigerode) and really liked it.

Yes, I'd book in advance. That saves you some hassle upon arrival.

Ive been looking at accommodations in Goslar as well. They seem to be similar in price and maybe a little more updated. Maybe because they were in the west. I would like other opinions of which one they would choose,
and why
Thank you

Norsky - it has been 16 years since the German reunion!! In the East, you'll find either old crap or ultra-hyper-new and modern, and more and more of the latter. There is nothing in between, like, let's say, 20-25 years old, still all right but slowly decaying and in need of renovation soon. In tourist places like Wernigerode, a lot has happened since 1990.

I'd prefer Wernigerode as a base. Yes, I admit that I'm nourishing a secret love for that place. Both Goslar and Wernigerode are pretty and interesting towns, both are worth seeing. From Wernigerode, though, you have more possiblities for day trips without a car because of the steam train routes up into the mountains. From Goslar it's either buses or your own car.
Besides, it may be interesting to see and experience the changes and development in the former East.
