weihenstephan beer

Today at my heart dr. appt. I told him I was going to Germany in sept. When we finished up he told me I should visit the beer co that makes weihenstephan. The good dr. spent 15 minutes on the computer and gave me a map. What I would like is any first hand info. I would be able to spend 1 nite if it is worth seeing. thanks for any info. johnd

It is really close to the Munich airport. Where are you flying in and out of while in Germany. Maybe your last night there before your flight.

Unless you plan to visit Munich anyway, I don't think a detour from Rothenburg to Freising (where Weihenstephan is located) is worth it.
It's an interesting brewery, and Freising is also a nice little town - but nothing that much over the top exciting.
You can buy Weihenstephan beer in any supermarket in Germany, though.

Agree with cowboy, it is a four plus hour drive and if you go to Munich which I would then take a drive up and look at the brewery but not that exciting.

We have made it a habit our last night in country to stay in Freising. In addition to the brewery we like the Domberg (cathedral on the hill) where Pope Benedict XVI was ordained. The town itself is laced with walk ways along various streams/rivers that make for a pleasant "off" day.

The Wirthaus Huber is good for a meal. I believer that their Weißbier Huber is brewed at the Weihenstephan Brewery.

I am really not sure, that with dozens of breweries in much closer proximity I would drive from Frankfurt to Munich "just" for a beer ...

How about Heidelberg. Also picturesque, an hours drive from Frankfurt, at least three microbreweries and two bigger breweries in town, many more in a 20km radius. More time to enjoy the city and sample different beers.
