Our 20 year old daughter had decided on Copenhagen for her study abroad, so my husband and I are in the early stages of planning to visit her during April vacation.

She would like to do a little touring when we are there, and we are thinking of spending some time in Copenhagen and then maybe visiting fjords. Does anyone have any suggestions for logistics for this short time period? We plan to take public transit. We are not super athletes but would enjoy some hiking time. Also, some of us are a bit "height challenged" if that is a consideration on choices of trails. I am not sure if April would even be a good time to hike - we could also go on a tour.

We also love touring cities. Any suggestions on must- sees and on how to organize my research would be greatly appreciated!

April might still be quite chilly for hiking - and we don't so I don;t have any suggestions.

We did day trips to Roskilde as well as the various castles up the coast. And Copenhagen has plenty to occupy you for 4 ot 5 days.

Fjords in Denmark? My impression is that they are in Norway, and April would be early to see them comfortably.

There is a skansen (museum of farm houses) outside Copenhagen that is worth a visit.

I second the recommendation for Roskilde.

Thanks for the input and photo link (beautiful shots!) We were looking at maybe taking a boat to Oslo and then a norwaynutshell excursion (or something similar...?) I am having a hard time grasping the time frame though. I assume we would spend a night or two in Norway if we want to see fjords.

I am sure we could easily occupy ourselves based in Copenhagen - so maybe fitting in Norway would be too rushed for a one week trip...? I definitely want to see castles and we will want to see Roskilde. Is it easy getting from one area to another? Thanks again for the input!

It's easy to get around in Denmark on public transport, the rail links from Copenhagen to Helsingoer for example (where Kronberg castle is situated) are very good. Renting a car gives you more freedom without a doubt, but parking in central Copenhagen is expensive (but some places are free during the weekend eg opposite the Marriott or if you stay at the Radisson on Amager which has it's own parking). Also it can be challenging with all the bicycles, even though they have their own lanes.

There are plenty of places for walks or gentle hikes, in April Denmark could be sunny and cold or wet and cold. There are walks long the many beaches and cliffs above, north of Copenhagen near Gilleleje, which offer lovely views across to Sweden. Plus there are forests and parks and in April, spring flowers might be blooming (esp the wild daffodils which are called easter lilies in Danish).

There are fjords in Denmark, but they are not the same as in Norway, as Denmark is mostly flat.

As for touring Copenhagen itself, the usual sights are Tivoli Gardens (if open, check dates ), Carlsberg Glyptotek, Amalienborg Palace, Rosenborg Castle & Gardens and many other sights.

NIN can be done as a round trip either from Oslo or from Bergen.

But perhaps your daughter will have a better idea of what to do once she has spent some time in Denmark. Let her be your guide.
