The replies may have been a bit blunt but they were saying Rome Florence Perugia is not a logical journey in the short time you have. A lot of your time will be spent travelling. Clearly that is your choice. Florence to Perugia is nearly as far as Perugia to Rome. There is an express train service between Rome and Florence but not on the other legs of your proposed journey

Secondly there is no seaside resort near Rome that is likely to appeal to you.

Thirdly in Italy these resorts will be barely open because it is not attractive enough to Italians and they are still the major customers. Italians who have holiday homes by the sea will be visiting them at the weekend but they will not by and large be stripping off least of all going in the sea. Yes sporty types will be having a great time but they do not cause the cafes and beach stations to open.

You did not say when you wanted to go, people responded quickly before you book tickets. Some people ask for advice just a short while before they travel.

If you want blunt I suggest you look at some of the answers to people asking questions about New York.

I've looked up your location in Perugia, La Preghiera, and it looks like a lovely place for a wedding.

http://www.lapreghiera.com/

However, according to their website, if arriving by train, you should not go to Perugia. Here's the info from the website.

***begin quote
National railway stations: Terontola-Cortona or Arezzo
Both of these stations are on the train service from Roma to Firenze and are approximately 45minutes drive from La Preghiera.

Regional railway stations: Trestina
This local station is 5 minutes drive from La Preghiera and is on the train service from Perugia to Sansepolcro.

A private car service can be booked through La Preghiera to collect guests from the train station.
***end quote

The national railway stops are slightly closer to Florence (1.5-2 hours depending on the train you choose) but then you must arrange for the 45-minute drive to La Preghiera.

To take the regional railway, you'd have to connect at Perugia Ponte S. Giovanni station and it would take 3h18min, but you'd be a short ride from La Preghiera.

I'm sure you will discuss the options with others who are traveling to this event to make the best choice for you.

---
Some insightful feedback about traveling in Italy: Making too many train connections in one day is exhausting and provides that many more opportunities for something to go awry. No one has yet dared to mention what would happen to your plans if there's a train strike during your visit. I've been to Italy more than 20 times and have experienced a transit strike of some kind during 90% of those visits. Be ready with a backup plan.

Good point ellenem about the transit strikes. I have been in Italy twice when there were train strikes and the last time I was in Rome there was a taxi strike (and I have only been to Italy 5 times!)

schmalls01, have you considered renting a car? It might make sense for you to rent one when you want to leave Rome as you could use it to go to the beach and then on to Perugia. Just a thought...

I'm sorry you thought we were hyper critical -- we are an opinionated lot and aren't shy about voicing opinions, but please don't take offense. I really do hope you have a great first trip to Italy and that will whet your appetite to want to return for more.

Me too. I was being forceful, but I thought in a sort of tongue and cheek way. I don't want you to smack your husband; I just said that I would be thinking about smacking mine if he insisted on a beach day on this trip.

Many people here have a lot of experience visiting Italy. We are opinionated, for sure, but we also usually know what we're talking about.

We do want you to have a great time, but your planning sounds impractical to some of us with a ton of Italian train experience, and knowledge of Rome and Roman beaches.

Sorry.

>>>This is our first trip to Italy. I was hoping to get some insightful feedback about traveling in Italy. I admit that I don't know how to travel in Italy, that's why I came HERE to ask- so spare me the judgments.<<<

And everyone is giving you advice based on multiple trips to Italy. Much of what you are trying to do is not practical and will make for a miserable time. Would you prefer everyone just say "wonderful plan" and let you make foolish mistakes?

>>>I might recommend saying- "never been... I don't know... sounds like an interesting trip...never tried that before.... "<<<

Many of us have been/do know and that's why we know it's a mistake to try.

>>>great impression made to a newbie, guys!<<<
And vice versa.

Schmalls - I do second the other opinions to spend more of your (limited) time in Rome, but if you are set on a beach near Rome (this is YOUR trip after all), I second Sperlonga. Fregene and Santa Marinella are just not worth it. Sperlonga has a beautiful beach just in the town, the water is usually warm enough to swim in May and the town itself is so lovely to wander around (whitewashed houses, winding, labarynth-like streets). You will have to come back to Rome to get back to Perugia, however. Still, if your husband has his heart set on a beach visit close to Rome, I don't think you could go wrong here.

I was looking at the guaranteed trains in case of a strike. There is one guaranteed to Perugia from Termini (not sure if there are date restrictions- ie days of week)And one from Perugia to Rome(Termini)- as I stated before- I'm not sure if there are restrictions on those trains in terms of days of the week.
Regarding transportation around Rome- I'm guessing we could hop on one of the guaranteed trains for commuters in the AM and PM, correct?

Around Rome, you would be using the metro/trams/buses not the trains.
