Hey all, I got some comments upon my earlier request for renting rooms in italy but one website was purely for Rome and one website was purely for tourists (b and b, etc) I will be living there for a year so....I'm looking for a room to rent to live for that year. I'd prefer this option to rooming with American students in an apartment both to get more of a traditional experience and to save money. If anyone knows of any local websites there that one would look for this kind of thing on, I'd be happy to hear of them!

Hi winesaavy, will you be a student in Italy for a year? If so the university you will be attending should be able to give you info, and you should find info on bulletin boards at the university.

The kind of info you are seeking will be more likely known in the <i>expatriate</i> community of the city where you are headed. It sounds like it is not Rome - - and for smaller cities, there may not be organized (well, at least not on the internet) expatriate communications...

...but even so, you may find that expats in the closest city can direct you to resources that will be more helpful than any of &quot;us&quot; here.

Hi winesavy, Saw the other post. Would language be an iddue i.e. do you speak Italian. If not then it could be harder. Why not try to get a room in an apartment with other non-american international students. It would be a good experience and you may end up with places to stay in other countries when visiting if you get friendly with your apt mates. Bulletin boards at the universities always have people looking for and offering accommodation. Make sure you are able to communicate with your flatmates as it could cause problems in the long run. Have fun.

Of course, I would look at the flip side - - since language acquisition will add so richly to the year that the OP plans to spend there - - all the more reason TO live in a &quot;room to let&quot; with a family. If the first few weeks are a struggle, all the more motivation to put the effort into learning Italian faster.

And for all we know, winesaavy is leaving 90 days or more from now. Whatever familiarity with Italian s/he has already achieved, it could be increased by a thousand words between now and departure. Learning five words a day can be done by most people; with the right motivation, double, triple or quadruple that pace is not only realistic - - it would likely be very rewarding.

I'm going to Florence, on August 25th for one year, as a student. I have a beginner's level of Italian, having just completed a summer Italian 1 course and having previously been to Italy for a few weeks vacation. Not enough to hold meaningful full conversations, but enought to get around and exchange niceties. The expatriate website for Rome was wonderful, unfortunately I need one for Florence, any more ideas?
