Weather in Scotland in October?

We have been to Scotland several times and LOVE it. Anyway....I think I remember once in Oct. it rained heavily and was cold. We like the rain (NOT heavy) and chilly weather, but I have forgotten for sure. This would be the last half of Oct,,,(our preferred time to travel) Is there a history of lots of rain in Oct?. Would first part of Nov. be any better.? Tentative driving itinery would be Glasgow, Edinburgh, St. Andrews, near Inverness, Dornoch, Oban, glasgow....small towns near these cities probably. Main question, would end of Oct. be too late to go as far NORTH as DORNOCH? Thanks

A piece of string is just about as long as you want it to be. I'll bet you are not a Scot!!!
I was looking for a little sharper answer, for I KNOW the weather is different in Scotland in January than it is in Oct, and different in July than it is in Oct! Sometimes the trend is for more rain in oct than in Sept or visa versa....and EVERYPLACE has statistics over the years of rainest months. The further NORTH one goes, it is usually cooler. DUH! Things are often closed down in the north, I would imagine....and would it even be wise to go farther north in Scotland the last part of Oct.? That is a part where we have never been.

When we lived in Scotland, we used to say, "if you don't like the weather, don't worry it will change in 5 minutes." ;-) There are statistics, but who can tell what the reality will be. The day we arrived, we experienced four seasons in one day. We thought the weather was mostly unpredictable - rarely extreme, though - at least where we lived - Dunoon. At least in October you shouldn't have to deal with the midgies. I wish you the best trip whenever you go.

Two factors to consider - first, there's definitely an east/west split on weather, with the west side of the country considerably wetter than the east, so Edinburgh, St Andrews, and Dornoch might (that's MIGHT) be a little dryer. On the other hand, the storms out in the west can be fun to experience, too.

The second consideration is daylight. Scotland is at quite a high latitude, and by November it gets dark pretty early. That cramps car-based touring (in addition to the weather).

So is Dornoch too far? No, but you might feel like you're fighting Ms. Nature much of the time.

We were in Scotland Oct. 10-19, 2001. We had light drizzle for a couple of days, not enough to bother anything. Temperature probably in the upper 50's - 60's,

We visited early October in 2002. Logan Royal Botanical Garden still had amazing blooms. It was rainy and chilly but not cold, take layers. As they said on the Antrim Coast of Northern Ireland, "if you can't see Scotland it's raining, if you can ... it's going to." We saw many nice days, and few uncomfortable bus stops. Have a grand time.
