Scotland in October?

Is it crazy to plan a trip to Scotland for mid-October? Will the weather be so awful that I won't enjoy the scenery? (No, I don't melt in the rain, BUT...) Edinburgh sounds so fabulous that I would like to visit on my fall trip, but I don't particularly enjoy sleet or icy rain. I can't leave until mid-October..Can someone who's been during that timeframe share info regarding the weather? Thanks!

I was in Scotland in mid-late October of last year... it was fine. We definitely had quite a few drizzly days, but temperatures were pretty mild. In Edinburgh, I wore a light spring coat and was just fine. Whe we got way up into the Highlands it got chillier, obviously, but even then, not too bad- highs in the low 50s. The guys we were with golfed several times with no problems.
Enjoy Scotland, it is awesome!

October is fine for Scotland. I have been there several times in October and encoutered daytime temps from 70's to low 40'S. In general the east side of the country is cooler and drier while the west is wetter and warmer.

I have never encountered snow in October (but it CAN happen).

But I have had temps warm enough for a picnic. So you should plan for cool days, cold nights and everything from bright sun to pouring rain.

Edinburgh is fantastic after the summer tourist hordes have gone home.

October can be a bit mad weatherwise in Scotland - growing up there, I can remember it being warm enough to sit outside and also wet enough to be nearly freezing! That said, snow is pretty unlikely (especially in Edinburgh - as a coastal city it doesn't really get much.)

Don't let the weather put you off, though. Edinburgh is a beautiful city even in the rain - the castle gives me emotional shivers every time I see it and I never fell that I've been there unless I do. I'm lucky enough that I go there frequently as my mother-in-law lives there - hopefully I will too by next year!

Thank you!! I can live with what you are saying - variable and cold are fine, it's sleet that I hate! I far prefer to travel before and after the summer crush is over - generally April and October. I am so looking forward to Scotland & Edinburgh - have read nothing but raves! You've eased my mind.

It is a wonderful time to go, especially if you like the Festival plays. Al the 4 stars we saw were great.
