I was planning a trip where my wife and I would hike the Grosse Scheidegg between Meiringen and Grindelwald on or around June 13, 2010. However, I have been reading that the temperatures on those dates may be in the 30s (F). Is this a hike that we can safely and comfortably make at that time? We aren't adverse to dressing fro cool weather, but daytime temps in the 30s (F) sounds like it may be too much. If this is not ideal, are there any alternatives that you would recommend? Our trip is June 13-21. We were planning on splitting time between the Bernse-Oberland and Northern Italy. Should we just stay in Italy?

I have hiked the same - Grindelwald to Meiringen - an all-day marathon and one of the most interesting hikes i've ever done.

I assume you are thinking of icy trails and dangerous thus - i remember taking most of the way a narrow twisting paved road that the Grindelwald bus plies and the same going down thru the lovely valley to Meiringen - so it is a smooth paved trail if you chose that way - we took some regular rocky trails to detour at places.

The trail goes via Reichenbach Falls and along it.

I envy you doing this strenuous but great hike

Before setting off, please contact the tourist info about if the trail is open or not. Also, if the weather is bad, don't go.

Should you stay in Italy? Well, even we Swiss, who are Gods in making money and keeping our country clean, cannot forecast the weather. We keep trying but we manage to get the weather right only up to 3 days ahead.

If you can be flexible, only go to Switzerland if the weather looks good (3-5 day forecast), otherwise stay in Italy.

You don't seriously expect anybody to predict the weather one month ahead???

I can't quite understand from your post whether you think 30's is too warm or too cold.

The weather at any time here is unpredictable in advance. here is an example - last week it was 25C on the plain and very sunny. This week, 10C on the plain and pouring with rain. That is how it goes. In June, at 1500m, I would expect it to be between 5-15C. Whether it will rain or not you will only find out 4-5 days ahead of time...use the MétéoSuisse site for accurate weather forecasts - www.meteosuisse.ch

Thanks to all for responses. However, perhaps I was not as clear in my intial inquiry as I could have been. I do not expect anyone to anticipate the precise weather for a region a month in advance. I was more interested in the weather in that region during that time of year, generally. Obviously, the weather will fluctuate over the years; however, I have had a hard time finding information on the region's climate and wanted to know what I could expect as a temperature range. Also, 30 degrees F would be 0 Celcius, which to my mind would be too cold for a comfortable day hike. I mean I have done it, and had wonderful times, but that just isn't what we wanted to prepare or pack for.

For mid-June i would expect much warmer temps than the 30s - even at Gr. Scheidegg but as many have said the weather is very variable

You will get a wide temperature range even within a day at that altitude. It can be below freezing at night and warm up to 20-25 degrees C during the day... or you can get caught up in a storm which dumps a lot of snow at high altitude right after a sunny warm day.
You need to be prepared for all eventualities - that's all.
