The passes are sold only at the metro stainos, the counters are open only on weekdays, weekends you have to ask for an attendant somewhere near the escalator. When you buy it the day or the first day is written on the ticket by the metro person, you do not have to validate it.(You can't because the ticket is bigger then the slot of the machine)
One day ticket is called NAPIJEGY
3 days pass is called 3 NAPOS JEGY

Eva, Please correct me if I am wrong?Looking at the cost of the ticket, I think Jim may have payed for a one way ticket. I go to Budapest every year. And when I was there in late 2000, I paid 1500 forint for one way. I am very sure it cost more than 1650 forints round trip. I love Budapest so much! I have never been been ripped off by a ticket person. But by the the ticket machines yes! A taxi driver did over charge me once, but to me it was a fare price. I was told that I was over charged by my hotel, other wise I would not have known, as it was MUCH cheaper then what I would have paid in here in USA. I am only a home health aide, I am not rich, but I do not mind spending more money in a country that I love and enjoy so very much. I am returing there in about five and a half weeks! I am so excited! I am trying very hard to learn the language too, which I know will help me to be a better traveler. Eva I would also liked to thank you for all your wonderful in put here, you are a true Blessing to me. Alice

For Alice
It is great to be called a Blessing.
I think Jim paid 2x 1650 for a round trip ticket,instead of paying 2x1800.
I do not buy round trip tickets, I did it once in London, there was a traffic jam on my way back to the airport, the airport bus was 20 min late, so I had to take a taxi.It was a double loss.
I was cheated by a taxi driver in Milan-I speak well Italian-realising it only on my way back to the airport.I had felt the price reasonable as You in Budapest.
I have hundreds of stories of tour guides, tour leaders pickpocketed or cheated or completely lost.We are overconfident. The experienced tour leader of my japanese goup I was working today was picpocketed last week in British Museum. If the loss is not a big one take it as an experience.
Next time I'm going to the airport try to find out how the minibus roundtrip ticket system works.
If you have any question regarding your upcoming trip feel free to ask.
Rgds
