Looking for recommendations on a walking tour for Rome and one for Florence. At this point dont have a particular area that we want to tour, so would be interested in hearing about what's available and other's experiences. Thanks!

You can download Rick Steves walking tours on ITunes free. Sometimes the Tourist Boards will have them also.

We have always had good luck with the local TI. In Rome we have used Angel Tours and Florence Walks in Florence. Very pleased with both.

We loved the food tour we did in Rome. If you're interested I'll dig up the details.

If you search TripAdvisor you'll see that they have a truly remarkable amount of really well deserved 5* reviews. We loved every minute of it!

We also did a food tour in Rome through Walks of Italy and it was great!

I'm a big fan of Context Travel. Did an architecture tour with them in Rome that was excellent, small number of guests (just the 3 of us, although it might have been as many as 8). The guide was an American architect working in Rome. They typically have guides who are experts in the subject area of the tour, e.g. a cookbook writer for food tours, historian for history tours, etc.

We have enjoyed free walking tours in several international cities, as well as one just recently in DC. The first one we took was about 15 years ago in Rome, and it was fabulous. We usually make a city walking tour our first activity in each city we visit and always see if a free tour exists. (It is of course not technically free as you tip the guide, but I would do that for one I paid for).The guides are typically young energetic college students who knowing they are working for tips are very enthusiastic and knowledgably. Try one, you will not be disappointed. Just Google free walking tour Rome, or whatever city you are visiting. Enjoy!

More to check out --thanks! I agree the free tours are great. It seems nowadays cities often offer mutliple free tours which is one reason I thought I'd see what people experienced and enjoyed.

I also like Context Travel and have done about three tours with them. They are not cheap but I thought they were excellent.
