Walking in Paris

Hello,

I find all the information quite useful on this site (have been helped a lot). I have been reading about travelling within Paris and I am wondering, if the only 'outside' city center paris travelling I am planning on doing is going to Versailles and Disneyland, would 2 1 day Mobillis passes be worth it. The reason I ask this is because I don't want to do big trips like this back to back (which is what I would have to do if I bought the Paris visite card. I was thinking for the rest of the time buying a carnet of 10 tickets and using them when necessary.

Am I planning this wrong, or should I look into something else? One thing that would help is I'm going in July, and coming from Canada so the exchange rate bites big.

Any help would be great.

Thanks

Cynthia, how much is a Mobilis pass? It costs 4.90 euros to go from the St. Michel RER station to Versailles and 9.60 euros for a carnet of 10 tickets, so each ride is under $1. Depending on how much the pass is, if you're not planning to ride the metro or bus very often, the carnet is probably the way to go.

If you are planning on going to both Versailles and Disneyland, a 5 zone Paris Visite card will include both of those fares and all the metro rides you want in between. If you aren't going back to back there is a 3 day and a 5 day metro pass. 3 day is 37,35 and 5 day is 45.70 euros. A mobilis one day pass for zones 1 to 5 is 11.70, so you will need two of those plus a carnet. So it may be a little cheaper that way, unless you plan to use the metro alot, but the single pass may be convenient, you can weigh the importance to you.

I think what you are asking is should you buy a Mobilis on the days you are going out of Paris because you won't be using the metro much that day other than those trips? YOu don't need a 5 zone Mobilis for Versailles, it's in zone 4, so that cost is 8,50 euro. If it's close to 5 euro oneway for a single ticket to Versailles, you should get the Mobilis, as that way you can use it for a metro or bus ride in the evening after you get back. A 5 zone Mobilis is 11,70 euro. I don't know cost of a ticket to Disneyland, but I suspect it would be the same situation. I think you should buy the two Mobilis plus carnet, probably, for maximum flexibility.

MObilis is always cheaper than the Paris Visite, I believe.

Thank you everyone for your help.

I was uncertain about the ticket to get to Versailles, I wasn't sure if I had to buy another ticket to make the extra distance.

I think I may stick with the Mobillis pass, that way we can use the metro as many times before and after our trips out of the city.

Thank you for your advice. Any other would be appreciated.
I do have one other piece of advice that I just thought of. They have special deals at the RER ticket offices for certain excursions where you get admission to something about free if you buy the RT train ticket. I think they might one of those deals for Versailles. If you are going to need to buy a ticket to Versailles, this would probably be a good deal and preferable to buying a Mobilis. YOu'll have to ask the ticket clerk, usually they will automatically offer you one if you ask for an RER ticket to Versailles from the Invalides station (if they have such a deal to Versailles, they do to Auvers-sur-Oise which is how I learned about these deals). If you have a museum pass and won't need a ticket to Versailles, go ahead and get the Mobilis.

I doubt if they have such a deal to Disneyland as it is private enterprise. They do have some kind of Passeport for Disneyland Resort which offers entrance to one park or something like that, I don't know the details, but you could ask about that also.

There is one catch with the Mobilis that I know about -- it cannot be used at either airport (Orly or CDG) even when for the right number of zones, so you may not be able to buy one at the airports, either--something to do with the management of the rail line there by the airport that won't allow it, I don't know why. You can definitely buy them elsewhere in Paris, though, so if you were planning on buying them at the airport, just thought I'd warn you in case they say they don't have them.

Actually, when I said it cost 4.90 euros to go to Versailles, I meant round trip (sorry, I should have been clearer on that), so it wouldn't make sense to get the Mobilis for 11.70 unless you were going to ride the metro 6 more times that day. That seems very unlikely! Hope this helps.

Susan: thank you for the clarification. That does sound like a better deal.

Christina: I did not know that. I plan on buying the pass for Disney (38 Euro, not including transport), but I did not know Versailles had the same thing.

You all are awesome.

Cynthia -- I'm not positive Versailles has the same thing, but I think so. YOu should ask the ticket clerk for specials on that (RER fare+chateau entrance fee); it's probably called the Versailles Passeport.

If the fare is only 5 euro RT, I might only buy the RER RT ticket, depending on your evening plans. But the Mobilis won't cost 11,70, as I said, it is only 8,50 because Versailles is not in zone 5. However, if they do have the special combination tickets, that sounds like the way to go.

Cynthia, they definitely do have a deal where you buy a metro ticket along with an entrance ticket to Versailles. You buy in the metro station right at the window where you would buy just the metro ticket (at least it was available at the St. Michel station, so I assume it would be available at others as well). I don't remember how much is was, though, as we had the museum pass and therefore weren't interested in the combination ticket.
