Villa Scacciapensieri, Siena

Hi all,

I’ve heard that this hotel is between 1 and 3 miles outside of Siena. I will be staying there in June, and want to know how far it is to WALK from the hotel to the center of Siena. I’m sure there’s a difference between distance on windy roads and distance as the crow flies.

Has anyone made this walk?

- Alice

It's definitely too far for a reasonable walk, unless you want to devote an hour or two to getting to the center of Siena. You have to cross major highways, not a scenic trek. There are buses during the day and cabs for evening. We stayed at Villa Scaccipensieri the first time and from then on we've stayed close to the center of Siena.

Alice, wondering how your stay was at Villa Scacciapensieri as we are staying there in July.

It was fabulous!! Unfortunately, the weather was cool and cloudy the week we were there, so we didn’t get to use the huge, beautiful pool.

We had room #44, in the main building, with a view of the gardens and Siena in the distance. Some rooms on the end had balconies, and views of the countryside, but I think our view rocked.

The staff was very nice. The front-desk staff seemed to change shifts a lot, but they were all helpful.

The hotel grounds are really lovely, and we enjoyed strolling around after dinner. The villa is not as rural as I imagined, so you will hear scooters and traffic if you leave your windows open, but it’s not a big problem. The driveway to the road is pretty long. A regular city bus picks you up at the end and drops you near San Domenico (a lovely simple medieval church) in Siena. So convenient! Just make sure that if you’re staying in town late for dinner, that you have them call you a taxi. The taxi stands were hard to find at night.

Let me know if you have other questions. I’ll post a trip report soon.

- Alice

Thanks, Alice for all the great info on the Villa Scacciapensieri.(especially about getting a cab at night--I never would have thought about that!) Will post a trip report when I get back.
