Here are some of my tried and true finds in the area:
Amalfi:
-For tourist services, such as car rental, apt. and room finding, internet and other services, go here, right in town: altracostiera
www.altracostiera.com
-Restaurant S. Andrea, right on Piazza Duomo, good pizza and at night it is nice to sit outside right by the steps of the church. English spoken
-Al Teatro, on a pathway, just ask, really good food family style
-Da Maria, really good food too, piano background music, lively and fun
-Da Gemma, more quiet, in small but brigh and airy rooms, great fish and interesting desserts, excellent wine selection.
-Lo Smeraldino, good fresh fish, outdoor seating by the waterfront
-Luna Torre Saracena, good food and service, romantic setting by the sea, separate area for bar/drinks with excellent views
Massa Lubrense:
-Antico Francischiello da Peppino on Via Partenope 27, www.francischiello.com
Really good food, antipasto bar, excellent service and views of Capri and by.
-Da Michele on via Fontanella 12, another excellent place on the waterfront at Marina Lobra.
-Osvaldos, coffee on the square
Positano:
-Ristorante Bruno on via c. columbo 157, my fav. outdoor/indoor seating, home cooked food and inexpensive.
FOR SANDALS- La Botteguccia on via T. gendino 13
CLOTHES - Marilu (and some more I will certainly see when my bills come in)
Sorrento:
SANDALS - Corium on via Degli Archi 20. Very nice owner who makes your shoes right in this shop, you have so many styles to choose from and he fits them to your feet, then a few hours later you have them....so...
go to:
-Da Gigino Restaurant right across the path for some excellent pizzas, and really good vegetables and excellent service while you wait (all of the food is good here).
-Ristorante Taverna Azzura at Marina Grande, www.taverna-azzurra.it, another great place, fish just taken off the boat for you to pick out and eat, it is right on the sand.
-Chaplin's pub, fun place to speak English, wonderful owners
-Matilda Disco, on piazzo tasso, www.matildaclub.net (I was invited here but didn't manage to get there, probably just as well, but young locals love it, good place to meet(I might have been the oldest person there if I did go})
JEWELRY - Bottega del Gioiello on Corso Italia 179/1818, this is where I buy a piece of 18k something, usually handmade by Germano.
SHOP - Fernando on via San Francesco 10/12, this is the shop where some of the proceeds are used to help the stray dogs of Sorrento, excellent prices for wood pieces. I bought some hand carved wood religious pieces for gifts. You sort of have to dig around to find things, but I like Fernando and his wife, I didn't see her this last trip.
-Car Rental, Travelcar, www.travelcar.it on via degli arranci, English is spoken and they are helpful and not that expensive.
If you have any other questions, I'm here.

This has been fun sea urchin, I feel as though I have been on the trip with you!
I picture you and seashell as modern day Lucy and Ethel.
I have some questions:
Which was the bad restuarant you mentioned?
When are you going back? Will we hear more stories? Are your trips always this interesting? How is Sorrentino after you left, I bet his life got more boring!

Hi n.nut, I'm going back in November so I'll see "Sorrentino" and liven his life up agan, lol. I will probably have stories, we'll see about that.
The restaurant maybe isn't a "bad" place but the night I was there solo, I ordered minestrone and it was really watery and tasteless, so I ordered proscutto and melon and the meat was low grade and the melon wasn't ripe, so I stopped ordering and just drank the vino! It was the Laterna in Sorrento.

It was La Laterna in town. It was nice sitting outdoors in their courtyard and it was crowded so I guess some people like it OR maybe since I was dining solo they just dumped low quality food on me, who knows, the bread and wine were good though.
I won't go back there.

Thanks, because someone had recommended this place to me awhile back, and I went in "solo" also, didn't have such a good experience either. So it's not just me, then!
At times being on your own can work in your favor, though!
Just saw your photos- and really like your shots! nice to see you, and seashell, and the views of Amalfi, and shots of Pontone (I spent an afternoon there last trip). The ancient stairs are a favorite motif of mine, and your shots are great!

This is so funny, I had one of the assistants at the office pick out some pictures to put on the website and then he went and uploaded them. They are not in any order and I didn't get to ok which ones either!
So you all saw them before I did. I wondered why he was chuckling to himself! Maybe on Monday I can get some control back!
I'm glad you liked them though, especially my mystery guest! He was so endearing, not at all like his tv personna.

Love your stories and pictures. I will be spending a week in Amalfi in July at the Grand Hotel Saraceno. Is this where the restaurant you mentioned, Luna Torre Saracena, is located? Any other tips for us? Thanks. Joan

It is the Luna Convento which is right on the tip of land (if you are facing Amalfi from the pier, it is on your right) in that ancient tower.
Sfowler and Marilyn, you are to quick for me, you are two sharp cookies!
joanw, I can't think of any more tips, but you can ask me something and I'll try to answer.
