Vienna's Lipizzaner Horses... All About Them

http://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/episo...tallions/8286/

Saw this great PBS Nature coverage of Vienna's famous Lipizzaner Stallions last night - if going to the famous shows or rehearsals which is a must thing to do in Vienna you may like some background on how these unusual equines are trained, etc.

I have always loved those horses, since reading about them as a child. I have been able to see them twice in Colorado.

But the best was seeing them in Vienna, in that gorgeous indoor riding school. We also toured the stables, which are surprisingly simple. I was surprised we could see them so close, as to stand at the stall doors. Can't touch them, of course.

I owned an Arabian horse for 31 years, and they have similar eyes and attitudes.

I'd like to find the PBS special to see all the footage.

We "toured" the stables by accident when someone left the gate open. We were quickly shooed out.

this was a 2014 show and these are repeated incessantly so stay tuned and check PBS web site for schedules.

the best part was when the younger horses - until age 3 they are allowed to simply horse around, literally - only after turning 3 are they put thru their paces and trained.

Yes noble beasts for sure!

Saw it last night. It was really interesting and those horses are more than fabulous. What a lovely job, working with them and taking care of them.
